Noob asks: Do you skip over nickel and penny signals?

Like Toad said it all depends on your location. I'm usually on older properties and not a park. I dig it all. I've found some amazing things that gave off terrible signals.

Depends on my mood. I have dug thousands of penny signals, thousands of mid tone signals, thousands of lower nickel tones. Not one single piece of gold in ten years now, and I hunt a lot of county lakefront park turf.

I am less interested in the VDI numbers than I am what I am hearing. I don't dig the broken clipped signals. I will did ALL clear signals that register on both axis even if the numbers change. I have tested and retested this in parks and every time I dig a signal I don't normally dig, it's trash. Mostly gum wrapper foil, small chips of aluminum or other. Until the item is in your hand you're guessing.

... passing on pennies....snobs.

DIGGER27,

Re your post #19, what machine(s) were you using when you dug those rings and the bracelet ?

Thanks,
ToddB64

The white and yellow gold ring was the F70, the rest were with the F2.
Still looking for my first gold with the Nox but since I started using that one V and buffalo nickels are showing up in higher volumes so until I find gold old nickels are keeping me satisfied...and digging lower signals happily.

It depends on location for me. If hunting in a park where there may be lots of zinc pennys dropped, I usually pass those signals by unless it's a solid "one number" signal on my 800 nox. Those may be a big class ring or small silver ring. If I'm hunting an older house yard I dig all zinc signals. I always dig nickel signals of 12-13.

Good advice. It is location for me too. Older deep coins being found means there might be some questionable signals, so I dig anything 70 and above on the AT Pro looking for copper or silver coins, and signals in the 49-53 range to find deeper nickels. A shallow "blip-blip" 75 loud signal means a surface zincoln and I do pass those up.

Thanks for your reply DIGGER27 !

Seems like the little Compadre and F2 machines that have found so much gold and silver Jewelry in the past are being ignored in place of Nickel-addicted Noxes !

All I read about is Nox, Nox, Nox ! Wish we who can't afford high-end wonder machines could read more posts on FMDF about costly Jewelry being found currently with low-to-mid class machines like the Compadre, F2, Ace250, Classic II and Bandido II µMax for example, along with show & tell tips that we can absorb for encouragement and use with our machines.

Guess I'm just a bit envious of the affluent who have the means to buy those high-end machines. :sorry2:

ToddB64, I started with one of the the cheapest detectors out there, a BH quicksilver, found enough coin and the resale value of the machine got me an ace 250. What i found with the ace, and it's resale value paid for my sovereign gt which i bought used. Finds from the sov gt paid for my excal, which paid for itself many times over and literally put a roof over my head! Bought an etrac which paid for itself in the first 4 hours hunting.
Having really nice machines is great and makes hunting trashy sites easier, but is not just the machine, but the ground you put it over, experience and research.
I am always willing/and usually do sell just about anything I find, this has allowed me to upgrade along the way.

Thanks for your PM zeemang !

I get the drift of your suggestion, but sorry to say I've been metal detecting for over 131/2 years with my progressively-accumulated arsenal of machines (shown in Signature at bottom of my posts) and I still have them all btw, but have never found a single gold or silver ring or any other expensive piece of Jewelry, just coins, but not a heavy amount of them.

Admittedly, I haven't hunted nearly the amount of hours per year as DIGGER27 and others such as yourself, but over the past 131/2 years I have searched many public parks for anywhere from 3-4 hours per park trip during my younger years, up to my current limit of about 2 hours per park trip at age 78, with 26 years of Diabetes and 2 1/2 years of Parkinson's disease. Even with doctor visits and taking my prescriptions regularly, these diseases and the meds. sap my energy, especially if I'm forced for lack of shade to hunt in the sun when it's hot and/or humid.

Now being retired on a low SS income and with no investments I'm just lucky to have the machines I accumulated during my past working life plus the two that were gifted to me by my brother-in-law. So, no Noxes, etc. for me ! I'll have to use what I got and just keep hoping that Lady luck will help me stumble across some valuable Jewelry.

Best Regards and HH !

The only multiple Indian heads I've found (2) sounded like zincs. Under a tree, and not deep.

With my 6" coil I found a Walking Liberty Half that sounded like a copper penny one way, and junk at 90 degrees

I am learning SO much digging signals and listening to my Patriot. Yeah it's not a "Nox," but it is what I can afford...and it has enough power to grow as I do. I have been 'pennied to death's recently(lol) and now I am ready to start going after lower signals. I am taking this like eating an elephant....one bite at a time. I believe if I am patient and maintain my enthusiasm with fun finds as I go, eventually I will get to some major stuff in the dirt. I mean heck, I did score two large cents not that long ago and it was (I think) my sixth hunt ever with the Patriot. One reason I enjoy the Bible, for example, is that there is ALWAYS more to learn. Keep it fresh keep it fun keep it simple. And find a good mentor. Digger 27 has helped me...a lot!(I like praying too)😊. Best of success from one newbie to another.

Todd I have as part of my arsenal a Gamma 6000 as well as a Nox 800
I LOVED my Gamma.. It should help you find many deep things..
as many will tell you it is all about LOCATION.. do your homework and I am sure you will find more.. GOOD LUCK

Nickel signal is the best signal of all. Skip that and you won't be finding gold or platinum.

I’m 67 and I definitely cherrypick the targets I dig, especially pennies. Now I will start out digging pennies to get a feel for the possible potential of the property. If it is an older property and pennies might be wheats or Indian heads then I stoop and dig. But if they are shallow and probably zincs then I pass.

depends on where i am but i do skip over certin penny type signals but always dig possible gold signals but after seeing that 3k ring i may have to suk it up and dig it all:lol:

Yesterday at the new-to-me park every solid 51 on the ATP was a nickle. Dug five. I'm paying much more attention to mid tones but it can be real tough in some places with square tabs everywhere. Sometimes I pass on zinc signals but not often.
