New from the Caribbean

Welcome to the forum from an old retired sailor who spent three years at Roosevelt roads back in the 70's. Three best years of my naval career Loved the island and the people

I haven't done any detecting since I was a kid. Out of curiosity I looked up my detector because i remember what it looked like but not the name. It was a Radio Shack Micronta 3001 or something very similar. It looks like an antique! I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with it. Its a huge black box with a handle and a needle-screen.

I went with the Bounty Hunter Tk4 for my first step into the hobby as an adult. Part of me wishes I went with something better BUT, the bounty hunter will be a great one for my son. I can always upgrade later.

Hopefully the Bounty Hunter will at least be better than that thing was!

Are the beaches very trashy over there ? I have used a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV over in the Philippines , worked just fine. Last trip earlier this summer i took it back again , this time with a 4" coil ,because of the trashy beaches there. In the Philippines they bury or burn most of their trash. Bottle caps and pull tabs all over the beaches. I imagine with the rich history of your island there is a lot of interesting things to find.

Beaches over there

How safe is it over there for tourist that want to come to detect and sight see, i have hear a lot about the high crime rate there. Would love to tour the island some day and see the sights. Love tropical places with lots of history. That is one of the things i like about the Philippines 400 years of Spanish rule and over 7000 islands to explore. Now that i am retired i would like to travel a lot more.:pirates::digginahole::detector::workforgold:

its fine. now isnt the best time because of hurricane maria. lots of govt employees and linemen etc have jacked up hotel costs. also, hardly anyone has power. but in 6 months or so when its back to normal it will be fine again.

crime is localized. not a problem where tourists go. its all violence among drug dealers. ive been here 4 years and havent witnessed or been a victim of a single crime.

anyone who wants to come down just PM me. i know the island and the language and the tourist spots/former battlegrounds - just could learn a bit about detecting and hit some spots for treasure.

ive been diving here quite a bit, TONS of wrecks from colonial times to present. im sure the ground holds plenty of secrets.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Hope the goverment speeds up the aid and recovery efforts to get things back up and running over there. Hope 2018 is a lot better for every one over there, and they get the power back up for everyone.. Will be watching to see the kinds of finds you have early next year. Watching the snow falling out the window here with below freezing tempatures wishing i was out detecting.:santa::gettree::xtree:

Good to know the crime isn't as bad as reported by the news media here , the way they make it sound is that the crime rate is making a lot of the population take a one way ticket to the states. After they get the damage cleaned up may be some of the members on here will be looking for a tropical adventure and metal detecting there. I really enjoy places with lots of history and really like the tropics. Right now it is 12 degrees and snowing, not going to be above freezing the rest of the week.

Detecting there

I was looking up a little information on your island , saw pictures of the big fortress there , can you hunt any where near it ? I am sure people on here would enjoy any picture of the beaches , fortress , or any other historical sites as well as any thing you find there.:pirate2::pirates::pirate::tropical:

Welcome.
I'm living in Hatillo and have been here for about 10 years. I have a buddy in Camuy that has a detector as well, but we haven't had the opportunity to get out together for a few years. I dive as well, but my diving buddy took off for work so I haven't been diving in a couple of years either.

Welcome from the Florida Treasure coast.

If you had a Minelab Excal you could clean up.
