Need Simplex input !

Depth will be about the same, but unmasking and separation will be superior on the SP24. Plus, it looks much cooler than the SP22 :D

I'm glad someone asked this. Just got the simplex about 3 weeks ago. I'm better with it but still struggling. I had an Ace 250 before it so i'm not used to VDI. I had been wanting to get another detector with VDI info thinking it would really help me determine targets. Well, as somewhat of a newbie still (detecting 1 year) i've found the VDI has not really been helpful at all, for me anyways. I still can't determine what i'm digging, lol! I just dig everything! One of the biggest problems i'm having is not really being able to "lock" onto a reading on the VDI. I know it will never sit entirely still but its always jumping big numbers. I know the stock coil is supposed to be a little harder to get a stable reading with. Almost every video online you see the simplex with the SP24. Will this coil help out with more stable readings. From what i can see on videos other people's VDI numbers seem to sit still with that coil on.

Aside from that, I really like the Simplex. Feels natural in the arm and i haven't gotten a sore arm or shoulder yet. I don't have a whole lot besides a bounty hunter IV and the ace 250 to compare it to but so far it outperforms both. Still trying to learn the different sounds and doing pretty well but when they start combining two tones (besides iron) i get confused and end up just digging it. Any input would be great. Always interested to hear other people's approach.

Are you changing your angle 90 degrees when you find a tone you like. My simplex generally will give me a consistent tone both directions on a good target. You may also need to lower your sensitivity a notch to gain more even tones. My simplex works best at one notch below max. I still get plenty of depth. You may turn you iron volume down to keep the grunts from driving you crazy. Those are a couple things that work for me.

That Ace has what? 12 ID segments, and the Simplex has 100. Right there alone, the Ace will have the illusion of more stable ID than the Simplex. Also, the Ace has discrimination modes, and the Simplex does not. That means, unless you use discrimination on the Simplex, you will be digging a lot more junk compared to the Ace.

The Simplex has very high sensitivity, which can also cause a jumpy ID. Don't be afraid to drop the sensitivity down 2 or 3 bars from maximum.

In trashy sites, don't use the stock coil. The SP 24 coil is far superior to the stock coil for many reasons.

Don't forget to ground balance on clean ground.

Good point about the ID segments. The last two days i've notched 0-15 discrimination on park 1 & 2. This helps a little bit. Most of the time i forget to rotate 90 degrees. I get so pumped when i hear something good. Amateur mistakes i guess. So, i'm trying to do that more. Also lifting my coil a lot to see how large the target is.

Something i'm learning now today are the different tones between field mode and park modes. It seems field mode is more of a pinpoint type of mode where it will squeel for any target. A higher pitch indicates closer to surface where as lower pitch would be deeper. The pitch doesn't seem to represent the type of target.

Park modes the tones seem to represent the target. Higher pitch means higher conductivity and lower pitch would be lower conductivity. I'm not sure about the tones in park modes representing any kind of depth. I can pinpoint much easier in field mode but more junk. Park modes are less active but for me better indicators of what's below. I guess maybe it would be worth while reading the manual! Need more hours on this machine too.

I usually run sensitivity two bars down from the top. Maybe i'll try three.

I've also heard varying opinions on ground balancing only if mineralization bar is 50% or higher otherwise just leave it set at 90 where it is when you turn it on. Around my house my Simplex auto balances at around 48.

Last but not least I ordered the SP24 from Kellyco. Went to a park a few days ago and i couldn't even move my coil without it freaking out. I just wanted to get right back in my car and go!

I'm going back over all the places i hit with the Ace and pulling stuff. Just pulled a silver bracelet last weekend from a spot i went over 20 times with the Ace.

I've been detecting for 50 years and I use the Simplex+ as my backup. I find it very reliable on the VDI and can set it to find only coins if I want. Location is everything. Better locations make for better finds. In the right location, a $50 detector will fill your pouch. In the wrong location, even a $2,000 detector will find you nothing.

As detector said, you can use discrimination and find only coins. If you want jewelry, then you're going have to dig a lot of trash. That's true with a $50 detector or a $3000 detector.

You might want to try Park 2 in trashy areas, because it's the highest recovery speed, and will also give shorter "blips" compared to more elongated blips with a lower recovery speed.

Turning 90 degrees on a target to discern if it is trash or treasure is a myth. A lot of trash will give a good tone and ID even when turning at 90. In contrast, deep coins, coins not lying perfectly flat, and coins near trash, will most often not give a good tone and ID when turning at 90.

I don't know how that 90 turning myth got started. My guess is it started from the really good advice of going back over an area while sweeping at 90 degrees, but that advice somehow got twisted into erroneously meaning "Only dig targets if they're repeatable at 90 degrees". If you get a good tone and ID in only one direction, dig it!

Thanks for the demonstration. Exactly as I’ve discovered in my hunts.

I like your test garden.
It might seem common sense to most but someday I’d like to see a video of how others have built their test gardens.

It's not my video :)

It's a video from a You Tuber named "Iffy Signals".

I like to turn on signals. I don't use it as a dig/no dig though. It just provides more information. Could be a coin on edge, partially masked signal, etc.

When in doubt, dig it out.

I'm glad the Simplex got some discussion LOL seems like nobody mentions it anymore. I almost only use sp24 coil

Lately I've been using Park 2 or field mode. The other day I changed to Park 1 in a gravel park and found where somebody threw down some AA Batteries. Park 1 ignored the batteries but both Park 2 & field sounded off. [ threw the trash into a dumpster like a good boy ]

My test garden with pennies, nickles, dimes, & quarters [a year ago, 4" & 6" deep] only sound out after a rain , usually pennies only. We have bad mineralized ground here and I think it hurts the detectors.

alto I seemed to be complaining about the Simplex, I really like my Simplex

I appreciate all the comments. I guess what it really comes down to is learning what is a good signal and what isn't. I mean a good signal is pretty obvious. Good tone, good VDI. But there are always the ones where there's a little iron grunting with it or right at the end of your swing. I've learned to pass them up.

Was out today. I am pretty good at calling out pennies now and also small foil stuff going off VDI. I need some work with the 30-50 range though as i don't think too many coins fall in that range. It seems to be pull tabs and small aluminum. Does that sound right? Thought about discriminating up to 50 but i'd miss out on any possible gold rings or nickels. I like finding nickels no idea why but they are far off from the other coins. I'm anxious to get my SP24 and see how that does.
