Hello all. Really could use some help to I.D. this. It is an eagle pin or brooch and appears to go on a strap or a sling?
It is brass with gold plate. It seems All the hardware is on the underside as well… just heavily encrusted. Which I have left alone.. I have looked everywhere and can’t I.D. it.. any help would be GREATLY Appreciated!!!

This was found at a civil war era train depot in ElmiraNY. It is now a church field. Within walking distance of the Hellmira civil war prison site. I have plenty of experience digging this stuff and I’m convinced it’s military…. But I’m completely STUMPED!

I don't see the eagle either. How do you know it is brass with gold plating? The side with the encrustation looks more worked, would you consider cleaning it a bit? Sorry, can't help yet!

Man, I'm not seeing it. I think it is brass that has been melted. Is it just a the eagle head or eagle in flight? I'm trying.
It’s a perched eagle.. looking to right. Our left. Haha. I actually saw the Hoover boys find this exact thing in the water somewhere. As soon as I found it… I knew I had seen it. Anyway they have sooo many videos that I can’t find the episode. They had a picture and explained it went on a officers strap or sling. Can’t remember what war or country. His was missing all the guild.. the picture was not. I agree how the pictures make it look but it is not melted at all. Part of the clasp I believe completed the eagle head and is encrusted on the reverse. Thank you all sooo much for responding. I’m dying to figure this out. Happy diggin!

I can actually see what you are talking about. The first picture shows the head facing you and the third picture is the back with the wings tucked in.

So this is how it appeared on the picture I saw. On a strap. This is exact orientation. The head is turned slightly to the right our left. The tip you see would be the beak then only one eye behind it.

Haters will always hate!, stay tuned
Do you know how to use the magnifier to take a photo on your phone? And can you use the photo icon instead of attaching a file, so the photo is in the body of your post?

If you could post one in focus close-up photo of a recognizable detail, it would help.

The reason that you aren’t getting much agreement, is that many of us have been detecting for multiple decades and have dug hundreds and hundreds(thousands?😅) of melted blobs that look just like your find.
