Need a digging tool now

I started with the Kellyco Gator digger (Lesche-style) because it came with my pinpointer. I like it pretty well. It's very strong. I've had to change the grip on it and I need to change it again. Sharpening this digger helps.

I recently got the Fiskars just to try it out. It's much sharper and I like it better for the initial plug cutting. I can tell it won't hold up to prying nearly as well as the Gator, though.

I carry both the Fiskars and Gator on me now. I cut with the Fiskars, and if I feel I'm having to pry too hard at any point, I break out the Gator and put the muscle to it.

Check out the Harbor Freight Mini Shovel. 28" long, 6" blade, light as a feather and cuts beautiful plugs. $7.99. Handles sand, dirt, gravel, rocks and roots. I can dig sitting, kneeling or stooped. Really sweet

Has anyone been stopped by LEO for carrying these? they look like large Knives, Just curios in Fresno it may be a problem.

Thanks I know Newbie question... :)

I have been using the fiskars digger for the whole year. 10 bucks and it came with a life time warranty. People talk about the handle coming off.. I am a brute and I have not been able to achieve this.

Ditto. Been using this for about two months now in the hard arizona dirt. I've had it start to bend slightly when pulling very large objects out when using it like a lever but I have just redug with no issue. Not bad for $8.

Not trying to knock this digger but wouldn't dirt, grass, etc. get stuck in the point (end) of the blade where it is forked and make it hard to dig.

My wife has been using a Fiskars for about 6 months and doesn't have any issues with grass getting stuck in the "v" on the tip. She also uses one side of the tip to pop out shallow targets sort of like using a screwdriver.

I've been using the same 3-in-1 knife for over thirty years. The only difference is that it's shorter from numerous sharpening's and I padded the handle when I first got it to keep from getting blisters. And no, my hand has never slid down onto the blade. The current wooden handled Hori-Hori knife looks about the same. It is dished so dirt removal is easy. I have even pounded it into rock hard clay with a hatchet. Try that with your Lesche. It has never felt like it was going to break. If it was, it would have years ago.

That Folks is BAD TO THE BONE!!

I prefer the jackson 7 in 1. It's only $15 on Amazon and it comes with a heavy duty sheath. This thing will cut through sod like butter and it is almost impossible to break.

The Fiskars are ok to get into the hobby with, but those of us who use them much at all know that they break where the handle meets the blade.... My son doesn't hunt near as much as I do, so we picked up a Fiskars for him. He broke it last week, it got a good months use... but he's 11... I had mine for about a couple of weeks, broke it, then moved on to a Lesche and haven't looked back, that was four years ago. I will say that the nice thing about them (Fiskars) is that they have a lifetime guarantee... But to me it was worth the $40 to get a Lesche and not have to worry about breaking it.

I like my lesche, and when I get beyond 6 inches, I can put some dirt back in the hole, then turn it upside down and pack the dirt down some so I can get all the dirt back in the hole and replace my plug. Works good for me

I agree with roadapple. I haave a number of diggers including the Lesche and the 18 inch Mini. 99% of the time I use my Mini. It is one awesome digger.

My first digging tool was a Fiskars. That little notch at the tip was more annoying than it was useful, then the blade rusted up underneath the handle and snapped off while digging a plug. It only took a month to rust through like that.
I bought a Lesche next, and used it for about five years before breaking it. I called the company and they immediately sent me a new knife. I've had the new one for about three years now, and have had no problems with it.

I have an A.M. Leonard, if they can survive in the soil and rocks around here I think they could last just about anywhere. You can find them online for $17
