I have been researching MD's for a month now and I am at the point of overload. It seems the more I research, the more confused I am. I know some like Chevys and some like Fords and think the other is junk, but that is only opinion. The are both good cars, and I am sure all the detectors out there are good detectors. It is the options that drive me nuts.

I need help/advice in the selection and here is what I want. I want to spend $1000 (with the discounted price), plus or minus (better on the minus) and need it to:

Search coins, relics, jewelry. I will be using it at the Oregon Coast and inland in the mountains I am interested in beach, but not in the water or wet sand. I want as much and as simple technology as I need, letting me know what it thinks it is and how deep. I do not want to diminish the hunt but do not want to hunt for nails.

I had an old Tesoro that just beeped and I was picking up rusty nails.

I like the full LCD displays, but not it is not primary. I would like to know what the detector thinks it is and how deep it might be.

Thanks

Richard

Get an used E-trac or Explorer SE Pro. You won't be disappointed. Great machine and great target ID.

Good luck.

Garrett AT Pro, Garrett Pro Pointer, Lesche Digging Tool, will still have money left over.

I have to agree with this in your neck of the woods (where it is WET a lot!) You are over thinking this. A Tesoro Vaquero, Minelab X-Terra, Fisher F5 - a lot of good machines for what you are hunting - but the boxes are not waterproof.

Stop freaking and start swinging!

I'm with Terry... X-terra 505/705 or a Fisher F5/F70 would all be nice TID detectors. Get a pin pointer, a good set of headphones, and decent digging tools and go have some fun :)

Your price range and what you want the machine to do don't match. In that you can get a much cheaper one that meets your criteria. You can buy an extremely simple machine that will find metal. But you already did that. To get one that discriminates you'll have to push some buttons. In that you have to buy a machine with those buttons. An LCD screen is a vague statement, in that most machines for $150. or more will have one.

You can compare different machines at Kellyco in different ways. Price, features, etc. Go there and do some comparing. You don't have to but there, and you'd probably get a better deal elsewhere. Keep in mind, you will need/want other items. A pin pointer, digging tools, pouches, etc.

Narrow it down to as few machines as you can and then ask for advice. Your looking for a turn it on a go machine, but I think you should get something with atleast a few settings that you may need later. Ground balance, a VDI, multiple tones. And you may want another coil. A Small one for tight places, like around trees, or a larger one to get to deeper targets.

yea, agree with the others. score a fisher f5 for $500, get yourself a quality pinpointer and a Lesche or garrett digging tool and get to swinging! as mentioned, the at pro is also awesome and is waterproof to ten feet. :)

"Garrett AT Pro, Garrett Pro Pointer, Lesche Digging Tool" - This is my combo too. Love it, no regrets!

What these guys said. Plus after you get AT Pro you can recommend it over the 705. Then when the 705 guys point out that it's a Minelab and the most underrated value MD out there you can play the waterproof housing card, it's half the fun of owning one.
