1920 merc it's a little scratched but I'll take it. I was beginning to think there was no hope. I was along side a river in a dried up pond. The bridge that was over the river was dated 1925 thought that would be a good spot. There is a mill I'll the river that appears to be pretty old. There was a pretty old bottle dump not far from were this coin was. The bottle dump was very frustrating with all the other trash. I was on the embankment when I heard the sweet sound I've been waiting to hear. Finally got a silver coin. Silver# 1 FTY.Lol

great close up pics. Congrats on the find. I love coins like that because it has character. After so many years under water - you saved it!

Full power ahead Scotty! You'll find the second,third,fourth....tenth...it will NEVER get old! Silver coins are the best! Silver rings are a gas too! Silver coins from the dirt always have a "look",at least all the ones I've found and all I've heard of...silver tends to be "dirt-phobic"! Before I found my first, everybody said it will be very apparent that the coin is silver from the second you see it. I though,"OK,we'll see...". I dug a 6" Roosevelt and it was IMMEDIATELY apparent what it was! I'll ALWAYS remember the first well. Most of my silver coins have a place in my head,I can pretty much say exactly where each came from. Finding really old coppers is awesome too,any coin with a super old date is a REALLY good find!
Congratulations! This will be the fuel to find the next..and next...

Big Congrats! My first silver coins was a 1920 Mercury Dime. I was super excited that I unearth a coin from that way back. The roaring twenties!

Thanks this post was from a couple months ago. But it is winter and decided to clean up some of my coins since I am not digging. When I looked back at the pics i posted they were aweful and decided to update with better pics. You are right I'll never forget that one. I also found one of those coppers you speak of and today as part of the winter project had it looked at by a colonial coin expert to find out it was a1787 connecticut copper. I love this hobby. Thanks for looking. HH

My very first silver coin was an unusual one given that it was found in Northern California; it was a 1929 French Indo-China 20-cent piece. I was a bit surprised when I dug it up!
