I was visiting one of my permissions, I've previously dug a silver Roosevelt dime, a Mercury dime, an 1891 ihp, and a big men's silver ring. Today I tried canvassing the area where I found the ring. It's a strange property, I'm likely to find 6 inch pull tabs or modern pennies.

Well today in an area where I pulled probably 3 or 4 pull tabs, I hit a strong 6 inch 85 signal. Was expecting a big piece of aluminum or maybe a quarter. Out popped my oldest coin, and my first large cent. (1864 was my oldest). It's a matron head large cent. The date can't be read unfortunately, but 1816-1839...I'll take it.

Also pulled a silver cat charm, 3 Wheaties, and 6 modern pennies. Also a brass toothpick case (or something similar). Very excited about this site, anxious to get back there.

Congrats on the Big Copper, the Sterling and all the rest. Maybe soaking the Copper in Olive oil and tooth picking it may reveal its date. Trapper

Boy that large cent looks like it has a lot of meat on it yet .
Must be someone here that can advise on getting that crust off. It may never be much as a collection item but knocking off that crud would still look great in your finds collection. Gotta be a date on it under it all.

Cleaning

You may be able to get a date if you are careful. I would try to remove all the dirt possible with a toothpick. Don't use any water or oil. They usually clean up better dry. Then use 00 dry steel wool and carefully remove the corrosion concentrating on the high points. You really can't hurt it. I clean almost all my coppers this way after years of trying different methods this produces the best results on our badly corroded Ohio coppers. Congratulations on your first Large Cent! Keep with it you will find many more. I'm at 19 this year and got 32 last year.
