Metal Detecting Lingo Glossary

I have one more for you....lol

Mole w/ Helmet = A target that seems to move under the ground from one spot to another:lol:

MD'ers Lingo Glossary of terms

I've read this whole thread and I cannot believe this one was not said yet?

Zincoln(s),1982 and newer Copper Plated Zinc Pennies, Usually Corroded when Dug up:shock:.

Heres one My dad and I have been using for 30+years now,
When Referring to a penny, other than a Wheatie or a Zincoln, We've always called it a Mickey Mouse penny!

Some from us shallow water hunters:

Floaters - Targets, usually pull tabs or small pieces of aluminum that tend to flutter out of the scoop.

Fall Thrus - Targets that are small enough to fall through the holes in the scoop, could be a 22 cal. bullet or a diamond earring.

What was that - What you say or think when something brushes your legs under the water.

Where'd He Go - What you say when that snake that you have been watching out of the corner of your eye, That has been swimming on top of the water suddenly disappears.

The "BILLY MAYS". This will now be the coined phrase replacing the "pocket spill".

Example. Whilst in the plug hole you find more than one coin or object. The phrase must be spoken aloud as each item is located in the hole..."but wait, theres more!".

Incredibly helpful glossary! I have been trying to describe to my wife some of the different terms - clad in particular was giving me a tough time in describing it to her. Thank you!

Heres another, also referred to as Whatzit, we call em DooDads, Anything that is obviously Man Made on Purpose, But Un Identifiable with out the Sum of all the other Missing Parts, The Top of a Trophy, or just the Gurs Head, A threaded piece of Brass. Not to be confused with Trash, or canslaw, or pulltabs, and foil.
They usually ring in at the Quarter range, up to The Dollar area, on Mine.

I may have missed it...... but, is there a term used to describe those dang foil containers for Ketchup, mustard, tartar sauce, etc. The guy that invented those things ought to have his butt whupped! Along with the fella that invented the pull tabs!

The list seems to be getting bigger and bigger over the years....Great one for all newbies.

JustLucky :D

another one for the glossary

Don't think I saw this one posted yet:
Test Garden. As I understand it, a test garden is usually found on a Detectorist's own property. It's generally a small area of lawn where one can bury coins (any metal, really) to test out their metal detectors. Also used for digging practice.

Feel free to amend this definition, everyone. It could probably use some fixing up and adding on to.

This is a great thread!:neat:
