Just recently arrived in Killeen Texas having temporary duty at Fort Hood until around August of this year before I ship out to Iraq. Left Fort Riley Kansas with high hopes of doing some good metal detecting in Texas but have had very little luck finding any promising places to detect. Went to Buchanan Dam a couple of weeks ago and received permission from a lady that belonged to the Chamber of Commerce there to use my metal detector around the beach area of the dam. I was detecting for about 20 minutes when the local rent-a-cop showed up and told me I had to pack up my gear because metal detecting wasn't alowed on Kingsland. I explained to him that I had gotten permission and from who but he didn't care and said the lady was wrong. So....long story short, I apoligized to the MAN and packed up my gear and left. Next trip was Belton Lake, also received permission to use metal detector as long as I fill up the holes which was no biggie since this is standard practice with me (always try to leave the place like I found it). On this trip, it cost me 4 dollars to get into the beach area and after 3 hours on the hot beach, I found 2 pennies and 1 clad dime. Oh well, I just chalked this up as one of the hazards of the MDer. Planning a trip down to Corpus Cristi over Independence day and was want to know if detecting is allowed on Mustang Island. I know the National and State Parks and OFF LIMITS (don't want to lose my detector much less my ride). Any hints, suggestions, or comments would be much appreciated.

I believe Mustang Island is OK. BTW, the part of Texas you're in has a lot of history. Unfortunately it's all privately owned. The best thing to do is go door to door on some older homes and ask permission to detect their yards. Trust me, there's some good stuff in those yards.

My dad lived in Killeen when he was a boy. You should detect his old house, there's probably $10 in change in the yard

Since you are in KIlleen you can got to where the new houses are going up abd dig over there. Off of the new airport road or how about all those houses going up just off post out the gate to Copperas Cove? I am sorry I can not remember names it has been a year since I have been there.

I've spent March on Mustang Island for the last three years. The beach hunting is disappointing at best. They use road graders, end loaders, and dump trucks on the beach. You can walk a long distance and not get a signal. If you could hunt in the water that might be a different story. Rob

Thanks to all for the tips I received on this post. Okidigger: You wouldn't happen to remember the address of your dads old house? :?:
