I'm heading down to Little Rock for a few days for July 4th weekend and I'm contemplating whether I should take my machine with me or not; I will be staying near the Jackson Reservoir off Cantrell Road (hopefully someone knows this area from LR on the forum?); I'm just curious if there is anything worthwhile hitting in that area? Google Earth is useless if you don't know the area, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Also, the laws in Arkansas are "you can't keep anything older than 100+ year's old", right?

Just checking; any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can't say much about the area as I am sure the local folks can chime in. Just wanted to tell you to be sure to check out the fireworks show on the 4th. One of the best I have ever seen back in 2010. The show was in sync with the 1812 overture. Hopefully, the fireworks show has not changed over the last few years.

Yes, I've heard that the fireworks are quite good! My wife is from there and we've been down a few times, although never during the 4th. Little Rock is a big city sprawled out so there are old sections, but much of it is 1970's and newer urban sprawl developments, so the parks I do see on Google Earth look pretty modern. Does anyone know if Central High (the historic school of the "Little Rock Nine" - a pivotal school de-segregation event in Ark. in the 1950's) is ok to MD?

Would love to know where the older parts of Little Rock would be to MD, but also safe. I know that Little Rock can be quite sketchy and I'm sure some out of town yokel Yankee like myself could wind up at the right place (a killer MD spot), yet at the wrong time.

Little Rock Central High is a National Historic Monument, so it is most likely off limits.

Yep, so I will cross that one off my list. I figured it was, but wasn't going to chance it until I did a bit more research, but figured someone would know.

....Also, the laws in Arkansas are "you can't keep anything older than 100+ year's old", right?....

I think you are confusing state (or federal) level laws, with other types land. So for example, if wherever/whatever you are reading at state level regarding "...100 or more years old", would ONLY apply to state parks. And have no bearing on ... for example, city, county, federal, private, etc....

Trust me: people in Arkansas are (gasp) finding 100+ yr. old coins :roll:

And where are you getting this "100 yr. thing" anyhow? I'm looking at the Arkansas section on the FMDAC site, and see no such thing. Perhaps you're thinking of ARPA (which would only apply to federal BTW) ? In which case, it's sometimes even been debated to be 50 yrs.. So ... gee, I guess that's up to your math skills ? :p

@Tom - I read it on this website, http://www.metal-detecting-ghost-towns-of-the-east.com/metal-detecting-in-Arkansas.html

And if you notice he is careful to specify "parks", aside from State and Federal lands, so who knows. I'm going to call the Little Rock town hall today and inquire about the specific laws as they pertain to the city limits. Little Rock has leveled tons of homes in the older sections and all that remains on most blocks are steps, and the sidewalks look original in some areas I am looking at hitting while I'm down there.

Old parks look rather far and few between in Little Rock.
