Man Finds $150,000 in garden!

And turning it into the police isn't going to have the same outcome? It wasn't accidentally dropped there, it was dropped there in a big hurry. So who ever is out of the money is still out of the money. So I guess you could hide the money and let the thugs know that you turned it in.

The guy made local and national news, and even to this forum with what he did with the cash  Nope, it ended when he went public for any future encounters with dope dealers. There is no encentive at all for whom ever made that drop to return for any kind of retaliation or revenge.

Like the guy said, he had enough problems in his life and for a hill billy he had enough good sense to unload that publically as fast as he could... smart fellow. I might send him a few bucks, he's not too far from here. Maybe he gets some teeth after all

I would probably do the same thing, I don't want anyone after me.

Dealers and gangs don't play by the same rules.

Money means more than peoples lives to them these days.

Besides what's wrong with my teeth?

The news report said that the police will hold the money for 1 year.
If they can not prove that the money was obtained through an illegal means during that time the finder will get the money back.

I wonder if there was more money that the guy pocketed
before he turned the rest in?

If the police were smart they would have left the bags there and
not publicized the find. That way they could have pinched the guy
when he came to pick up the loot.

The right thing in this situation is to keep the money and consider yourself lucky. You know 100% that this money did not come from legal means, it's not like someone dropped there wallet. Rent a storage locker, put it away for a while and bring it back into circulation slowly. I can tell you I would not be calling the cops in this situation.

Hopefully karma works out and he gets to keep the money anyway.

I think about what I would do if I found a cold horde over here in Germany. I would start shipping it back to the states slowly in the mail and the rest I would ship back with my household goods when I move. No way I'm giving up a treasure to someone who wasn't looking for it in the first place. My thoughts.

Never been in the crime business, but something tells me that cash stash like that had one if not two things. 1. A spotter somewhere, and 2. A narrow window for the pickup to happen. I wouldn't like leaving that kinda cash for any longer than necessary, cuz people DO just amble by like this guy did this time. That's why they call it "organized" crime. The finder was probably right in calling the cops, but it would have been too tempting to me to have not slid a few bundles of cash to the side and let the cops convince the crooks that THEY weren't short counting it themselves(making their grab.)

AND...do I believe that this guy will ever get this money after one year? NO. I don't trust cops at all, I don't! Life just doesn't work like that for "good guys" in this world. It just won't happen. martin

What i would do

i would have sold the house,kept the loot,paid off all my bills,left no forwarding address,if him,bought some teeth,started a new life:roll::yes::)

they will never let him keep it they will claim its drug money weather it is or not, and the police will keep it. but he did the right thing nobody leaves that much money unless its from a robbery or drug money. would be a different story if he found it buried in his yard i would think .he he

ditto.........

If they left that in my yard, I am sure I could hide that money and not a person would know about it. He could have kept it in the spot and took out a 100 grand and see if anyone came and picked it up. This is one freaky story That's why I am trying to open that safe of my neighbor's.

You were smart!

Being honest is a good thing (I'm not minimizing honesty), but in this case, being smart really prevailed. Duffle bags with $150,000? Who would "lose" that? Bad, Bad people!

My Point

I had posted earlier, saying keep the money. Everyone seems to think he get's a get out of jail free card so to speak by turning it in. I say take the money and split town, I don't think the people who misplaced it our going to be happy with him for turning it in and they sure as heck know that He turned it in now. So now he doesn't have the money and still has to worry about someone taking out revenge on him.

My guess is that he didn't have a great deal invested in the area or wouldn't have minded moving anyway, that 150K would have went a long way on starting a new life. Maybe he will get the money in the end, then he has to deal with every friend, relative, associate he never knew he had plus the people who misplaced it will know he has it. Should of packed up and beat feet.

They will give him the money if no one claims it along with the proper tax forms.Uncle Sam always gets his share.
No they wont. You're dealing with the government. They will say it was drug money and seize it. He won't see a dime.
