There is an Anthony Merlino that passed away at the age of 90 in 2012 Maryland). I'm not sure how to decipher info on dog tags. Is DOB on there? This Merlino was born Sept 16, 22. Oops, also middle initial "J"

Angelo's Angels has really helped my with researching information on relatives
for the tags I have found. Great People on a great mission.

A great site for finding people is zabasearch.com - I did a look of Andrew A. Merlino and it shows 3 hits... all the same person and all living in NJ.

Zabaseach shows all current and previous addresses/phone numbers, which is why there were multiple hits for the same person. This may be him or his son.

Dear Cliff,

Thank you for contacting me and wanting to return this tag to Mr. Merlino.

He served on the U.S.S. Wisconsin BB-64 built in 1943 from 44-46 Was stationed outside Luzon at the same time my Uncle Angelo was there with the 25th Infantry. It's possible that his ship provided support to the 25th I.D. during the Battle of Balete Pass in 1945, The wonderful news is that he is still living, at the age of 88. I sure hope you'll ask him if he remembers the 25th Infantry Division/161st Infantry Regiment when you speak to him, and thank him for his service for me.

I cannot absolutely confirm that address is correct, so you'll have to call or write him a letter to confirm it. Because we've run into some issues when making calls to veterans/families, I just want to give you a heads up that he might think it's a hoax/scam, so if he's not very cordial and won't listen, please don't take it personally. This can happen, because of all the awful phone scams out there that prey on the elderly. He might remember losing the tag, though. The other day we spoke to the son of a WWII Navy veteran who lost his I.D. bracelet on the beach in Okinawa. His son had heard the story many times and knew it wasn't a hoax immediately. Good luck and please let me know how it all turns out. All the best,

How exciting! I hope you'll be able to make the return face to face. And we'd love to see pictures! Congratulations!

Hey everyone! I found this thread while just poking around on the internet.

I wanted to let you all know that Andy Merlino was my stepfather, and he passed away a little over a year after this thread was started.

The dog tag was sent to him and he absolutely did receive it. I'm not sure he was able to fully appreciate this due to his illness, but our family certainly did.

I just wanted to say a big "Thank You!" to everyone for the concern and taking the time to locate the owner. It's obvious you all realized this little piece of stamped steel was quite valuable to someone and treated it as such.

Thanks again!!

Hey it looks like Sgt Wilks did something right!
Maybe the mods could "un-ban" him?
