Learning and improving

Couple more hours again yesterday at the same place but hunted out of the sand and around the sides where there is grass and trees and a few picnic tables. 1dime and 8 pennies all clad but for the most part easily found. I searched a hole in the sand that rang up 53 at 8" I dug around in that hole for what seemed a long time until I finally found it about a foot deep . It turned out to be a very small metal tube like a blistex or lip balm tube. Also the usual pull tabs about 6 of those and a flat piece of aluminum. My pin pointer is acting up . I put in a new battery and it seemed fine but after about an hour it started just randomly going off on its own .very inconsistent. I've read that these are prone to having this issue so it may have to be sent in to minelab.

Got to do some searching today at a campground we are members at. Its the off season and there is hardly anyone around . There are 6 different campgrounds and 3 are closed for the winter so I started with one of those. I was busy digging all day. 19quarters,11 dimes,4 nickels, 25 pennies a dog tag,a key, a small padlock and a small piece of costume jewelry and the one that really got my attention was an aluminum Madi Gras token which looked like a silver half dollar when I dug it. All clad but still a good day and I've only covered 1/2 of the smallest campground so plenty here to keep me busy for quite awhile. Unfortunately the place was built in 1972 so not much chance of any silver. But possibly some jewelry but there are so many pull tabs and bottle caps I got tired of digging them . I still dig one occasionally if it sounds clean. I'm getting pretty good at knowing what I've found before I dig it. great place to learn. I can now tell when I'm looking at a larger piece of trash and better at telling whats a bottle cap. before today my clad total was just over a dollar so it was a good day.

Got out again today at the campground here in southern missouri. There are actually 6 separate campgrounds here and I went back to the same one I've been in but either someone has detected the upper section I was in or something because I spent a couple hours going over the other half of what I did pretty good on before but didn't find much at all. Not a single quarter a couple dimes and a few pennies so I loaded up and moved to the next campground which was a lot better. I wound up with 9 quarters 9 dimes 18 pennies and a couple keys along with several pull tabs and bottle caps so over all a decent 5 hrs. Still no jewelry which really surprises me but I've still got a lot of ground to cover and also have a 5x8 DD on the way to help with the trashy ground. Seems like most everything I'm finding is in the 3-6" depth with a couple of the dimes were at 8" or so . Oldest coin was 1966 quarter.

Went back to the lake beach by my house today for a couple hours to try out the 5x8DD that I just got and went back over an area I had hunted pretty good before just to see how it would work in the trashy area. I'm really pleased with how ell it works . I started pulling coin after coin in no time at all. Pulled 4 quarters , 4 dimes , 1 nickel and 18 pennies in just over 2 hours or so. The deepest was a 1965 quarter at over 8" which rang up at 99 on my ATP. I was really excited to see what it was going to be. it looked like a silver in the hole very shiny but 1965. I've never had a quarter come out that clean and ring up so high. So very happy with the 5x8. I've got a couple of places at the campgrounds where I had pretty good luck so want to go back to those and see how the 5x8 does at those.

When they say go slow, they mean it. I took a few minutes in my cousin’s yard yesterday. It was built in the 50s and has a huge oak tree. I only had a few minutes, so I went straight to the tree (shade tree mechanics rolling around losing their pocket change). Hit a signal that went to 99 twice. Turned and hit it on a didferent angle and gave a different reading. The slower I moved over the top of it, the more accurate reading I got..... down to about 38. Dug it up and it was a piece of iron about the size of a quarter. Scanned the hole and nothing else was there.

So been hitting the campgrounds here and have been doing pretty good for me at least with the clad. So far I'm at just over 15.00 in a few days average 3-4 dollars a day. Just over 10.00 in quarters about 4.00 in dimes and about a dollar in pennies. Today I was out about 3 hours and found just over 3 dollars . The best part was 2 wheaties a 1952 and 1957 back to back finds but about 20' apart one on the front side of the concrete pad and the other on the back. Needless to say I spent a good bit of time in that area I was just sure there would be a silver of some sort there but no luck. Since this campground was built in 1972 I was surprised to find the wheaties but like they say you never know. I'm getting better at distinguishing between pennies and dimes. Quarters are pretty easy. Still rarely find nickels usually when I think it may be a nickel I end up with a pull tab. There are several rental campers here and those are looking like good prospects second one I did today near our camper while waiting for dinner to be finished I grabbed the ATP and walked over to it. Just by the door I hit what sounded to be a multi tone signal which was a bit confusing so I tried for a minute to pick out one tone and highest was an 85 at 8" but trying to locate it to one spot was proving a bit difficult so I dug a plug about twice the size I normally do about half expecting an aluminum can. tired out 2 quarters, 3 dimes and a penny my first spill ! Spent a few more minutes at that camper and pulled in another dime and a couple more pennies all shallow 2" . I'm have a good time finding clad and its adding up. I think total I'm getting close to 20 dollars. Every day improving.

Great stories, just read through the whole thread. I just picked up an AT pro and can't wait for the snow to melt so I can get started

Its a lot of fun especially if you can get somewhere where you get results. I added up all my finds today. I have found a total of 23.17 in coins the oldest is a 1954 wheat penny and another 1957 wheat. 67 dimes 59 quarters 150 pennies 4 nickels ( got tired of digging pull tabs so I'm sure thats why my nickel count is low) Also probably why I haven't found any jewelry yet.In addition to the clad I have found a few trinkets . 3 keys, a small padlock,a key chain/can opener, 2 dog tags,a hot wheel toy, a Mardi Gras token and my oldest and coolest item a 1937-1942 Missouri State Tax Token. today was decent day hunted till it started raining and in about 3 hours found about 4.50 or so A few quarters and a lot of dimes and pennies. Got a couple of days at the house before I get to get out again so I get to rest up. Trying to get on some old homesites nearby to get my first silver. Until then I'll keep digging the clad.

yes I to never once considered getting up and down and all the kneeling, limits what I do a little! But thanks to forum I purchased lite machine to start and read every article until I decided for me it would be a Deus and it all has worked well in no small part thanks to forum.

I spend my summers working at a campground that started in the early sixties. Its where I have spent a lot of time learning my machines as the whole county surrounding the campground is off limits to mders. Definitely a good place to rack up your clad counts. Good luck on your hunts. Can't wait for things to thaw here

Weather has been a little cold and really windy so haven't been out in a few days . last trip I only had about an 1 1/2 and racked up another couple dollars. Mostly quarters and dimes again and a few pennies. Tomorrow looks promising weather wise so probably get in a good day. Going to try a new approach and dig every decent signal above 50 . I like finding the coins but I just know there HAS to be some jewelry here. I know my pull tab count will go through the roof. I also plan to start in one area where there are about 10 campsites or so that I found quite a few coins. I went over them pretty good with the stock coil but haven't been back there yet with the 5x8 so I want to see how that works out. more of an experiment than anything figure its worth an hour or two of testing.

Loving following your thread. The progression is encouraging. I am fairly new, and brand new with the AT Max. Got out yesterday to a ball field and dug some clad as I begin learning what the darn thing is trying to tell me. It will be a bit more before I get out again as we just got about 18” of snow. Happy Hunting.

I too enjoy this thread. I picked up a used AT Pro at a steal but really haven't gotten out with it yet. Ground is still frozen and we're getting dumped on with snow as we speak.

Everyone starts somewhere and like you we all pull our fair share of trash out of the ground. Keep at it and you'll learn the language your AT Pro speaks in no time.

Thanks for the replies. Just when I think I have it figured out it throws me a curve lol. Most times its pretty consistent . Today was a great day I got to spend about 5 hrs or so digging. I did go back and hit one of the spots where I had been previously that I had been over pretty thoroughly with the stock coil, or at least so I thought. I didn't stay a long time maybe 30 minutes . I did find 3 more dimes and 5-6 pennies so It did do better. Where I have noticed the biggest difference though is where a coin is close to trash you can still pick it out so still very happy with the 5x8. I went back to one of the other campgrounds and picked up where I left off last time and in no time started raking in the coins. About my 3rd hit was a 98 @ 10" so I figured it would turn out to be another top of a beer can , not this time .... A KENNEDY HALF DOLLAR yea ! Thats my first one I was pretty happy to see it. About 30 minutes later I picked up a 86 but it was pretty scratchy at 6" deep I almost passed figured it was a bud light screw top but something told me to dig it anyway so I did. A SUSAN B ANTHONY DOLLAR ! Again a first for me. When I first saw it I thought it was a quarter but then I rubbed off the face a bit and realized it wasn't a quarter at all. At first i thought I found and old coin of some sort but realized after a bit more cleaning what it was . Still plenty happy with it. Finished off today with 10 quarters, 10 dimes, the Kennedy Half, the Susan B Anthony dollar and 29 pennies. The oldest coin was 1966 penny. Only completed about 15-20 camping sites still 100 more to do in this one camping area alone. This brings my clad count to around $32.00 ish . Funny thing is didn't find a single Nickel today but dug every good signal over 45 and every single over 50 so had pile of pull tabs to show for it. LOL Still no Jewelry and very few Nickels. Hope to get a little time in tomorrow but it starts getting busy when the weekenders roll in. I'll rest up and hit it again soon.

Sounds like you are getting into the groove. My wife and I went to a park yesterday for about 2 hours. I figured would have been clean out pretty good but I was pleasantly surprised to start finding coinage pretty quick. I followed a strip of grass about 10 to 15 feet wide between a sidewalk and a large ditch. I found 7 quarters-2 in one hole and again 2 in one hole, 4 dimes, 3 nickels, 11 pennies. My wife swept the outer field of a ball diamond. She found 3 quarters, 1 dime and 8 pennies. This park is in a fairly big town and I thought it would have been picked hard but most of the clad we found had been there for a while. It is a sizeable park so I will go back through the spring and search the less obvious places for silver. One never knows until they put the coil to the ground. Never assume a place is hunted dry. Always give the a try or you might be missing out.

Clad count is a bit over $50 now haven't counted it all yet. Found a 1944 wheatie today. My oldest coin to date is a 1940 wheatie. Got in about an hour or so today at the campground and raked in another 2.90 . Only covered about 6-7 sites so pretty good area. I dug 7 pennies 4 stacked together which I thought was a dime.Quarters are easy to pick out. Also found 2 nickels and 4 pull tabs that I was sure were nickels lol. I'm getting better and didn't have much time so sure there are still more coins in those sites as I went over them pretty quick considering there were a lot of signals that I want to go back and dig. I found another dog tag that I was sure was a quarter as it had a heavy band around it and looked like a ring when I dug it up so I guess it could be considered Dog jewelry lol. Trying to dig the clear 50's signals just in case but still no rings just pull tabs. Most everything in in the 4-6" depth range. Didn't have much free time to hunt last week and when I did it was raining so hopefully this week I will have more free time but being back home for awhile I'll have to find a new place to hunt.

been awhile since I updated here but still getting out couple times a week. Finally took a day and decided to dig the other tones that usually result in a pul tab or foil. I stayed after it for a couple hours and like I expected it was pull tab after pull tab. I still came across some clad but dug ALOT more trash. Was really starting to think this was a dumb move to waste so much time digging up the tabs when I hit a clear 43 tone on the ATP. I discounted the signal as foil and walked on. For some reason I kept thinking to myself that sure was a clear tone even though it was in the foil range. So I went back and swung over it again from several angles. 43-43-43 clear as could be. Curiosity got the best of me so I finally decided to go ahead and dig up what I was sure was foil. Nope a small gold ring about 6" deep. What a surprise. The setting was missing and I searched the hole for quite awhile but finally gave up. Turned out to be a small 10K gold ring. Either a childs ring or my wife seems to think it is a pinky ring. I didn't waste my day after all. I got up and hit a penny and then what I was sure was going to be a quarter and there was another ring. Looked to be a mens gold ring but turned out this one was some sort of cheap costume gold colored alloy but none the less still was exciting to find. So guess that just goes to prove you do have to put in the time digging the trash if you want to find the jewelry. Part of the learning curve I'm sure . What I have learned so far is listen to what my machine is telling me and learn from the others experience.
