Is the Pinpointer useful?

The question, "do I need a pin pointer?" the answer is no, but there is one thing for sure. If you do have one, your enjoyment of our hobby will become better, more fun and your recovery time will be much faster. There is the old way like chisel and hammer to make a note in stone or hitting "print on your computer" both now will work but advancements have happened. Take advantage of this trend. Enjoy and love our hobby.

That was not the question.

That was not the question.

"How useful and handy is the Pinpointer? Would that be money well spent?"

I take that as asking for a referral as to whether or not a person entering the metal detecting hobby would or would not have a need and if money spent off sets the degree of need. Sorry if my interpretation does not fit yours. I was just trying to give my take on the question.

No, the main original post asked this:

"How useful and handy is the Pinpointer? Would that be money well spent?"

I believe that is the exact same quote that I put in my last post and tried to give you my interpretation of that quote. Any way just go ahead and have it your way, because it is just not that important to try to hash out differences here in this venue. Have a nice day.

Are they absolutely necessary??
Nope.

Will they save you some time?
Yep

Will they actually help you make some finds (bring back home with you) ?
Depends.

Example.
A new or even experienced Minelab Etrac user.
You hit those deeper coins. They can vanish lots of times tone wise when sweeping hole with dirt removed. You may infact without a pointer (remember a pointer does have some detecting range dirt wise), be fooled.
You may physically pull out a nail thinking ooops I was fooled and hence walk away after covering your hole.
Guess what?
Your find (could be older coin) was down there the whole time and if you would have had pinpointer and used in bottom and around hole it may have alerted on your say coin.

So for the deeper stuff using deeper detectors I say they are extremely beneficial.
Myself I won’t leave home without one.

And believe it or not using a garret pro pinpointer actually cut my learning curve time big time using Minelab Etrac. Both in actual target recoveryntime allowing me to detect more thusnfind more. And the pinpointer helped me learn more how Etrac ( and other VLF detectors) can behave (try and fool me) thus I learned the tendencies faster.
If I would have just used my hands and eyes. I sure wouldn’t have learened what I didn’t as fast.
Eight , nine and ten inch deep coins can be difficult to recover without pinpointer. Using any VLF detector really.
Cheers

All you REALLY need to get out hunting is your main rig!....You dont NEED a handheld Pinpointer...You dont NEED anything else either...You can easily hunt totters and excavate finds with the side of your foot, you can hunt dry sand without a scoop and sort of kick/sweep/sift with your fingers...You dont NEED kneepads or a digger or a finds pouch or a vest....

Theres people here that dont have a handheld Pinpointer for many reasons, Sandgroper alluded to this....first, consider the extraneous cost...that initial outlay is quite a few quarters, and a claddy can stab them all up easily and faster without a handheld pinpointer with nothing but a screwdriver...so theres no need for a pinpointer there...It wont make him faster or better, in fact it will just slow him down and one more thing to worry about....

I will say, its nice to learn how to operate with the LEAST amount of gear possible..Just In Case you have to someday...you cant be shut down from going on a hunt on account of the lack or loss of a pinpointer or a scoop or a digger for any reason!. As long as you got your main rig, you are good to go! Everything else are accessories..even shoes! Each day brings along different challenges and opportunities! Learn how to Improvise and adjust to the conditions with your main stick first!!

Learn how to hunt as minimalistic as you can for starters...Then advance with gear and gadgets as you see fit that applies to your style and territory and productivity expectations...

So NO! For a New Guy, The Pinpointer is NOT useful! It teaches bad habits and doesnt develop the critical strengths!...Unless you want to carry around a pacifyer like a little baby all your adult Life!!

You know "Fred Bear" hunted a polar bear with a recurve bow and killed it with the first shot but that's not for everyone. I do agree to some extent though. When I make a find I use the screw driver first if it shows up as two inches or less. If I don't find it then I dig the plug. If I can't find it then out pops the pinpointer. I am a patient man but in the days before pinpointers I can remember spending a lot of time searching for a dirty coin that was in plain sight. My sight is not what it used to be either so if I have a hard time it's coming out. I like your look on life though. Your not the kind to go camping with TV dinners. LOL

A pinpointer....Well

It beats a 12 inch screw driver !! that was my pinpointer in the 70's!! I wouldn't go without mine!! Garrett the waterproof carrot!!
