Is silver REALLY a good investment for a SHTF scenario?

We have a room in the basement stocked with a few snacks and 50 cans of beans in case of a nucalure explosion. Should hold us for at least a couple weeks so we should be set. Ya cant eat gold!
after 50 cans of beans I think the explosion is going to be in the basement! :D

OP, there's something which is in much more demand in discussions of this type...

tinfoil

/thread

Unless you have a group of family/friends, you'll never defend your home, so being on a constant move is the only thing that will keep you alive. So, all the "preps" in your basement, were all for naught, but I'm sure someone will appreciate them.

Regardless of how well equipped you are, others will have you beat, hands down.

Depending what this "catastrophe" is, you and your home may not even survive, ditto on your band of bros.

I plan to do my part for humanity, find the first 30 year-old Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, and begin to repopulate the planet.
For this reason it’s why I always crack up when i read “ya gotta have stockpiles a guns n ammos! Gonna bees shooting every Tom Dick n Harry thets creepin round my place! Gunna be just like the wile wile west I tell ya!”

People in Venezuela are dirt poor. I doubt very many are trading PM’s for food.
If they didn’t own any metals in the past, most likely they have none now. Prices on goods there are doubling every day.

I believe silver prices are were they should be, even with the paper shorting going on. The high price spikes in 1980 and 2011 were artificial, and short term.

I'm always impressed by peoples shortsightedness. Are we never going to rebuild society after this scenario? Are we not going to require a currency in this "new" society? When we HAVE to restart an economy, what will we use?

The same thing we've always used that works perfectly fine until the fiat pushers get their way again. Gold and silver.

So after you folks get done shooting everything you see out of fear, those of us spending the equivalent of your beer money on Friday each week to stack silver and hide out during the ensuing idiot fest will be your new overlords.

You can bow later peasants. :D

If SHTF having gold and silver won't really help. Not enough people have it to ever be used as currency. If enough people don't have it, it does no good becoming a currency just because you have a lot. A currency systems makes the world tick.

If SHTF it will be like the movie the purge. You wouldn't even be able to barter with it without attempted robberies. And by that I mean a lot more robberies then today's standard. You probably wouldn't even be able to tell anyone. People will start targeting people of wealth off the bat.

Survival tools and skills at that point will get someone further.
If our dollar demonetized itself to that point the rest of the world would be in a worse position. They invest in our dollar.

I guarantee the majority of stackers who were living in Venezuela took their precious metals and relocated from their position. You would run in that situation. Not reinvest where everything is falling apart around you.

Everyone who had precious metals there would have converted them to a stable countries dollar.

So just how many of your shekels are you willing to exchange for a gallon of water, bag of flour, or block of cheese.....or even your life?

You seem to think civilization means "civil". Have you looked-around lately?

As someone who thinks about the whole picture, I'm not going to surround myself with piles of silver and starve to death or be taken advantage of. A well rounded and thought out survival plan includes PMs AND food, water and yes, a little ammo in case.

I love this "turning into the purge" theory. Are you trying to tell me the fat lazy people I see around me every day are going to turn into murderous maniacs and raid my modest home for some Ramen? Most people are scared little puppies with no survival instinct at all. After all, a scared populace is easy to control, right?

Yeah, I look around constantly. I see a bunch of scared chickens with their heads cut off running around worrying about fake terrorists and being PC while their government collapses an already fragile economy by printing fake "money" on my dime like it's going out of style.

What's funny is how some can currently ignore the fact of what the have-not's are currently doing to acquire things. Good to hear your preps and fortress will be invincible.

Tell you what, take a walk through downtown Detroit or Chicago some evening...get back to me.

Yep, it's obvious you have a complete and total grasp on things.

Odd since Silver was used as currency basically everywhere from before Roman times and up until 1964 even here in the good old US...:?:

"Stable (fiat) currency" doesn't exist man.

Fiat currency has and will always fail eventually. They all have. It's just the nature of the beast. We create a new "money" system every 30 to 40 years and we're due for the next iteration of fake "money" soon.

Just picked up another $20 face of junk 90% to add to the stack at just over 10X. Is it hurting anything sitting there? Nope.

Safe full of paper with dead dudes on it, or pretty shiny metal with weight and sound that humans are just naturally attracted to?

Gonna buy a few scratch offs? Naw. Get a pretty little Walking Liberty you can admire.

Easy choice for me fellas.

Bigger question is, why would I want to walk through downtown Detroit or Chicago at any time? :D You don't go in areas you don't want to be...

Seems pretty simple. There's no reason for anyone to come to my house looking for anything. It's just like everyone else's house in the area. Are we all going to just switch and ransack each other?

Yes, I'm well aware nobody would ever consider violating YOUR space. I bet you have a No Trespassing sign or two, to let them know you mean it

So, when your food and supplies are exhausted, and Uncle Sugar has failed to rescue you......you're just gonna lay down, give up and go to sleep, right?

Most men I know have a survival mode.

Uncle who is rescuing who? I don't even believe in a federal government for anything other than military operations and you somehow think I'm expecting a rescue? :?:

Nope. No reason for no trespassing signs.

Not sure why you're bothered that I don't believe everyone is going to come to kill/eat/rape/steal from me. Must REALLY suck to live in constant fear. I feel for ya man.

Do you not read what you're replying to? How do you get "I'll lay down, give up and go to sleep" from anything I've typed.

Reading comprehension is important if one is reading and then responding to comments on a forum.

In hurricane Irma I lost power for 5 days and I saw almost fist fights starting to get gas and police escorts. It only hit us as a CAT1. I can't imagine if we were ever nuked. Survivors would probably kill each other to survive.

Last summer when Irma came I took a picture of the flashlight isle of a walmart. It was empty. Zero flash lights for sale. I found the last one at a home depot. A mag light.

After Hurricane Katrina got hit in a poor neighborhoods they did loot each other and business and kill.

I'm sure you did. People are reactionary in general and irrationally emotional. Their failure to prepare meant they had to fling themselves into a mess that a simple thought out plan would have kept them out of.

5 days without power? Sounds blissful...:D

Humans are very fragile...even the ones trained and prepared...Especially Americans...

Most Americans have no idea about using PM's for trade, Most Americans have no idea what to do when the Lights go out...Most think it could NEVER happen...Most have never spent one rainy windy night out of doors in cold weather..Let alone take a whole bad weather week in stride...without pizza delivery, things can get pretty danged rough!

A lot of the Worlds other Humans would not even notice a SHTF scenario and go right on living like yesterday...So our 'SHTF' imagining is just that...its regionally dependent...

Its nice to think a guy has the practice and skills to survive in the Backwoods...for some reason...:?: Plenty of others do, and plenty of our Ancestors did...but hey, its no fun or any kind of comfort we are accustomed to......Night lasts a really long time out of doors, when its cold and raining especially...ask any old street bum, you gotta settle for a bit less comfort than normal!

in the SHTF, Ima gonna do it just for the curiosity factor, see how long i can last.. I didnt go through the Boyscouts and study all these Foxfire Books for nothing!!

Funny thing is, most of the talk on this subject is about dealing with other people...

When the safest thing to do is get away from other people.. Leave them to deal with themselves, you should be worried about the environment, momma nature, and yourself, not the other guys. While they are all defending their property, or looting someone else's, I'll be working towards a new life, away from all that chaos..

30 miles a day if that's what it takes..

<°)))>{

In my younger days, 30 miles a day would have seemed easy. Today, not-so-much. Prep and planning go hand-in-hand with practice. I know people who have purchased a nice flint and steel fire starter that still sits in it's package and some, out of the package they may be, but with no strike marks.

And the question of saving/hoarding silver? Heck, both will melt and go in a bullet mold. Ask The Lone Ranger. He did it for years with silver. Value is determined by whomever is buying it. There may be a price on something, but if it isn't worth that to me, I ain't buying it. On the other hand, if I want something bad enough, price is no object.

Just my two Wheaties worth.

Totally agreed here!...Mother Nature, the weather, all sorts of things other than humans to worry about..For me a gun is way down the list and more trouble than worth.....a lighter, a machete and a blue plastic tarp are the basics to get a guy through the night...that and other ancient skills carried in their head..better than gear carried on their back or a gun or silver coins or a cache of beans.....everything else can be appropriated in a timely fashion as needed...a guy has to get through the night first...'Woe unto ye if it happens in the Winter".... and.... Winter is Coming!..

I gave all my young employees a Mag block, then, took them down to the river to show them how to use it....made them all get a fire started with that mag block...talked about fire being a primary Human survival skill...Learning and practicing how to make it and tend it via various other means of interest...

..I thought the mag block was a good keychain fob AWA a reminder of just how Fragile THEY are if they cant make a fire!...A good starter on the thinking of what basic skills a Human is supposed to know!....If a guy dont have a coupla lighters on them at all times...you better hope you have a mag block on your keychain and know how to use it! Told them, "If you cant make a fire six ways from Sunday, all other preps are a waste of time...OK, you got a fire, lets see if you can catch a squirrel and figure out how to eat it?"

Human survival starts with being able to make Fire! Even not in a SHTF situation, just snowed in a blizzard and the power is out...It aint that easy..even with a wood stove and a Bic Lighter and some of those boxed logs they sell...
