I have a very small piece of 14k gold that came off of a 14k gold earring I have. I was curious how much it might weigh, and how my detectors would see it. I put it on my smallest scale and it read 0 grams. I need a smaller scale. I tested it on my Deus with the 9" HF coil and it would only hit it when in 54 kHz. Anything lower got nothing. I tried the old analog Tesoro Compadre, my tot lot monster, and BANG. No problem with this 12 Khz analog detector.

Okay.
That’s what you need to use.
Be curious if you used same settings and swept head of nail across coil and see what happens.
I'm sure it would sound off because, while both detectors had zero discrimination, the Compadre only has 1 tone, and the Deus was Full Tones. Thing was the Deus didn't even give a tone at all with zero discrimination. The nail would sound just like the gold. Or a quarter for that fact. I don't find many nails in my tot lots so I'm good. I just was surprised how well 12 kHz hit such a small piece.

Goldfield should hit that target easily with default settings. See what the ID is and then try it on one of the discrimination modes.

Fast should hit it too but you will need to make sure your iron volume is on or use Pitch or Full tones and you may need to lower the discrimination setting well below zero.

Interesting post.

For tot-lots I enjoy the Compadres - can’t say the same for the Nox in a tot-lot. I do enjoy the Nox almost everywhere else!

What size coil is on the Compadre?
It is the 5.75" coil which does help make it such a great tot lot machine. I also think the Compadre being an analog detector helps. They seem to interact with the ground and targets differently than a digital. The NOX 800 was a good tot lot detector I just couldn't get close to the metal like I can with the Compadre and Deus.

I know for some this size of gold is a waste of time. For me, any gold is good gold and so many detectors I have tried in tot lots just can't hit that small stuff. Earring studs, earring backs, BBs, pelts, and gold chains get missed a lot. I have a pretty fair collection of fine chains.
