I'm a bit concerned

I've been a self proclaimed dare devil my whole life. I rode freestyle bmx from age 13 to 28. Rode off roofs, hit by cars, 9 foot airs in 12 foot half pipes, slammed riding swimming pools. etc... Then 2 motorcycle crashes on street bikes, head on 40 mph collision in my jeep. A few stitches here and there and only one broken bone (collar bone)..

Then three weeks ago at age 45 I met my stair case in a pair of socks. I slipped off the first step and caught my self on the way down at the 3rd or 4th step. No problem (i KNOW HOW TO FALL)... two days later my should starts hurting. By the 5th day I'm in ALOT of pain. 3 wks have passed and I now have discovered that I have a badly torn rotator cuff.

This sucks.. Is my metal detecting "career" over? I get an X-ray in a couple hrs from now and I'm sure it'll come up negative. 1st step with insurance is an X-ray then therapy then MRI and so on. Been down this road....
Has anyone on here had a severely pulled/torn Rotator and what happened with treatment/recovery...? I'm pretty :( about this one since it just seems so unjustified. Reason it's in the water hunting section is because I can't put a dang wet suit on !!!!

No rotator problems but plenty of broke bones, shoulders out of joint, stitches, knifed, steel plates in neck and back. If I had known I would have lived this long, I would have taken better care of myself. Hope you recover soon.

I tore my rotator cuff about 6 years ago flounder gigging. I didn't do any surgery it healed on its own. Took about a year-and-a-half before I could lift my arm over my head. The pain was the worst part

I have had my right shoulder completely rebuilt 5 times. Unfortunately the last one confirmed that there nothing much left that came be fine for it. All of the ligaments in my shoulder are like jello instead of being striated. My shoulder will hurt a bit after hours of detecting but then I switch arms and give it a rest. I have also had spinal fusion from L2 to my tailbone and when my back aches, I take a break.

I wouldn’t say your career is over :)

That bites.... I guess that's why they give you 2 shoulders, swing with the other until the first recovers. Seriously though, hope it's nothing major. Medical bills will probably hurt more than the cuff in the long run.

Damn that sucks. You mean jiggin? That's crazy.

i'm pretty sure i'll need rotator cuff surgery on my right arm within the next year or two. Already had my left shoulder AC joint operated on and it's never been the same. Your detecting career is not over but it will slow you down some.

My advice, DO NOT PUSH IT. It's just not worth it. Take the time off to heal properly.

ADVICE THAT MY SCHOOL'S ATHLETIC TRAINER ALWAYS GIVES: When you start doing the therapy thing make sure you do your best and force, stretch it as much as you can as that has a direct correlation on how well you recover. Good luck!

I damaged mine years ago when I played a lot of tennis. No surgery but it took a year to heal. I couldn't even pick up a box of cereal or lift my arm to get something out of a file cabinet. That's why I wear a harness when I swing a metal detector.

It really sucked. Would have rather broken a bone. We were flounder gigging out a boat. A lantern and nine foot pole with prongs on it. I gigged a flounder and tried to pull the 17 ft boat in shallower with the pole stuck in a fish. I started to feel like my shoulder was on fire. Next morning couldn't move my arm.

Hang in there LT, things just take twice as long to heal when you get close to 50...

That was my experience too. If the cuff isn't torn so badly, that it absolutely requires repair, it'll heal... but SLOWLY. It took nearly 2 years for mine to heal (i grabbed a heavy chair off a hook in a garage... one handed. Ooops).

I talked with a PT doc, and his recommendation was that surgery is crucial for some tears, but mine wasn't bad enough to warrant it. He told me total recovery time would be about the same for my injury, maybe 3 months less 15-21 months, instead of 18-24, only I wouldn't have to pay surgery costs. I went cheap. No regrets. but DANG... it takes a LONG time for that to heal. The good news was that I could swing the coil pretty well after about 3 months. I just couldn't wave to anyone with it. :)

Google "bone broth", it will help with the pain and you will heal quicker. You need to make your own to get the best results.

My shoulder aches for a while after hours of detecting but nothing I cant handle. My brother tore his rotary cuff and had to have hours of surgery to repair. He did a tremendous amount of exercise to rehab the shoulder after surgery and he does not have any problems now.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Just got back from X-ray. Labs will be a few days. I'm expecting nothing broke. Made my PT appointments. Start in 2 wks. I know that tendons, ligaments take forever to heal because of the low amount of blood/O2 that they receive in relation to muscle/tissue. I went out swinging last week and it didn't seem to bad but this week (especially last night) was brutal. The cattle prod electrocution like nerve pains that i was getting last week are gone so I guess that's a sign of progress. Now it's just super stiff and burns real bad. Guess the CTX is getting hung up for awhile and the NOX will come out with the stock coil.... I plan on trying to get in the water today with a wet suit but might end up doing waders.

Back in 2004 I suffered a rotator cuff injury that has left me with limited mobility in my right arm. Fortunately I'm left handed so my detecting career has not been stifled at all.

Im a left too and it's also in my right. The right however is my swinging arm.

Kevin seems you and i share a past of beating our selfs up lol i Raced BMX from about 10 to 19 and played basket ball skate boarded and surfed so i had many many injuries as well and your right you become professional at falling lol but i too had a torn rotator cuff and it healed over time, i took it easy and didnt swing for a few months and it healed naturally, i have issues from time to time but for the most part its all good now ;) Hope ya get on the mend soon brother. Til Then I will Keep Your CTX3030 Warm lol ;)

Seems after the age of 50..... every 5 years my body changes.... not for the good either. Ive been a runner all my life..... and still do sometimes even after detecting for 7 hours. 22 years in the military and ive seen a lot of trees during those night jumps too. Never had a broken bone.... worst was pulling an arm out of socket a couple of time and some really black ankle. BUT..... at 66 i pay attention to what my body is telling me..... i try and avoid STUPID. I get up now days and walk like John Wayne to the bed room.

I went for the surgery, 6 weeks of PT and I was swinging, at least a little at the 4 week time frame. PT guru told me to strap my arm to the body as the swinging motion did not use my torn ligaments, lifting did use the ligaments. It worked for me. Meantime in the first 4 weeks I took up taking videos of others detecting in the water. Best of luck which ever way heals your rotator cuff.
