I have to ask!

Like I have said before, these beach hunters have my respect. I don't think I would last long getting pounded in the serf and lifting a sand filled scoop for hours on end.
They definitely earn what they find!

Why thank you, and I've said the same type thing about you dirt fishin' guys... now that I have started dirt fishin' for myself (see my ghost town thread below)

IT GOES DOUBLE!! Dirt Fishin' is hard work! My hat is off to you guys, I'll dirt Fish in the winter time, but it's SPRING and Spring Break has started so I'll be heading back to the beach soon to plunder all the drunk kids Spring Break booty.

Arrr Matey!!

Come on Coin Whisperer! Be happy with what you have! What beach hunter finds a GOLD POCKET WATCH and a 1925 (or 1931 i forgot which) ring?! You have it made with that Girl's School! :D

GL and HH

I think I could find enough clad in a day to live off of top ramen (oh, the diesel school days lol) but I would have to live under a tree or something because we don't even have a bridge here. Then, once I needed batteries I would be broke and have to panhandle for awhile.
If I tried to live off of beach hunting I'd REALLY be in trouble!

CoinWhisperer

Whats up bro take it easy up here, the guys are more sensitive up here , it's not like the coinshooter forum, and not to many CTX3030s can cut the mustard at the beach, , Pi's ,Cz's, Excaliburs , Gt's are run the most in the salt, glad to here from you, gearing up for some spring dirt fishing, happy hunting Earl

Just in case you missed my post from back in 2010.

When I found these rings I was still working full time and was only able to hunt as I was able to get away. (Too many days and nights over a 3+ year period according to my wife!!)

The area I hunt is a relatively small beach area that has been used by lower and middle income people for many generations thus there are few diamonds and the gold is generally not very fancy.

My finds have been generally high school and simple wedding band rings.

Most of the people using these waters are the same ones that have used them for a lifetime and with the exception of youngsters that are new to them, we have few new contributors to our treasure trove.

These are not so much "resort" beaches as "community" beaches and high end jewelry is the exception, not the norm

I envy hunters with vacationers contributing treasure to their “resort” hunting grounds.

Alas, I must keep working these "hunted out" beaches and finding the old, deep treasure that remains.

The oldest dated ring I found here was a heavy 18K man's wedding band inscribed with the year 1873!

In all my hunting I found a lot of silver, but only one silver dollar. (Never found platinum!!)

The picture is of finds recovered in 1983-85 using the Garret’s XL500 PIs I still have as back-up to my Dual Field. The XLs were fairly new at that time.

I never counted silver rings, only gold!!

Last count after three years ---275 gold rings!!!

Gave away a few, returned 33 to the owners and sold the rest @ $635.00 per ounce when I needed the money. (Woulda, shoulda, coulda done a lot better had I waited as we now all know!!)

Silver-----------maybe fifteen pounds!!!

Factor in the total time spent hunting and the return=maybe $5.00 per hour!!!

Enjoyment from hunting and returning rings----Priceless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah the good old days!!!

CJ

GL&HH Friends,

....and don't forget all the friends we have made through the years. :friends:

It's amazing how yellow is my favorite color now.

bunch of bologna

Nobody is finding that. Where do you get this from? Actually I am offended by the ignorance. Where do you see 30 gold rings a month? Bologna post.

Dude! Chill out! It was the man's honest question and no doubt some added exaggeration for emphasis. Why get offended?:?::?::?:

Hold up! Are you guys telling me I'm not going to be able to retire and just live off my finds? Looks like there's gonna be 3 detectors in the 'For Sale' section.

While I'm just a newby beach detectorist I've been quite happy with my success so far. That being said, I've found 7 gold rings in the first 2 months of 2014 for a grand total of maybe $400 in melt. That would give me about $50/week to live off of. With numbers like this, are you still saying I can't make enough to live off? Looks like it's back to work tomorrow morning.:(:p

Ok, I am probably an exception but here goes. I run a computer shop all year. In the summer it DIES. I hunt 3 - 7 days a week. I find at the most two platinum rings a year. Some years none. BUT I do live off my finds.

The ONLY reason I can is simple. My home, boats, truck and EVERYTHING else in life is MINE. I do not own a credit card, I have NO payments except utilities and 550.00 a year house taxes.

I have 10 scuba tanks and two underwater detectors. I need gas for my truck and boats and I am a happy camper. Could I live off new drops? Heck no. I find new and the older things.

I will never inflate my finds and everyone on here thats been here for a while have seen the trash I bring up.

So it can be done as long as you don't need a lot of money in life.

Didnt we have a fella in Austrailia a few years ago that lived off his finds for 6 months or a year?
Seems to me I recall him divings for underwater recovery of a couples lost wedding band at a boat dock, as well as metal detecting the surf.
It was at a peak in gold prices and he barely got by, but of course that is living in Austrailia.

Move to Connecticut and I will guarantee you will be working more than playing to pay your house taxes... I have a 1500sf house on .31 of an acre... my taxes for the house and property are almost 8 grand... Someone made up license plates that say "Connecticut the Tax you to death state"

I'm not near the beach Earl... the entire state is expensive... this area is called the gold coast...

You want to see what a house a tiny bit larger than mine sells for on the water?

http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/8-Westmere-Ave_Norwalk_CT_06853_M33504-24533

Their property taxes down there are run as high as 50k a year...

Problem is they don't use the beaches to lose their valuables... they belong to private beach clubs where we aren't allowed

Craig

Still it would pay you to move, I was down Melbourne beach this past year in May, the bay was in the community on the other side of the road, walk across the road were we were staying on the ocean, we looked at houses down their in the 300s between the ocean and bay, we asked a guy who lived in that neighborhood he paid 2400 in taxes for the year, there is no way CT would get that kind of money from me, because I would never live their, knowing that they tax you to death............

Where I was yesterday it was 45¢ and four washers. Water temperature about 64° and very few tourists venturing into it yet..

But, soon they'll be here by the thousands, putting on the oily sunscreen, drinking a little too much alcohol, and getting into the water about 10° cooler than body temperature, and Beach goody replenishment will be underway.
