I have a question.

I boarded the USS Ogden LPD-5 in 1985 at Long Beach for my first float. We had a guy that walked up the gangplank for the first time...saluted the colors...saluted the Quartermaster...requested permission to come aboard....then walked across the flight deck and puked over the side.

All we could tell him was "Just think Roger, only 5 months, 29 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds and it will be all over.":laughing:

I was on an LPH on a Med cruise , after pulling out of Beruit in 84 , we stopped in Israel for 2 days . I got 2nd day liberty , a couple of us rented a car and tried to drink Israel dry , it didn't work . But the next morning we pulled out , sea's got a little rough , I had to go toward the front of the ship for a haircut , sat in the Barbers chair , I could feel the nose of the ship rise and fall , good thing that barber finished when he did , I didn't get sick but I wasn't far from it . I spent the rest of the day in the middle of the boat nursing a bad hangover , close to the head .

Lol.

As of recently I have given a lot of thought towards joining the military specifically the navy.Since I like the ocean and ships so it would be a good fit for me. I was wondering if you guys think it's a good idea or if their are any navy veterans on here that might be able to tell me more about it.

navy was a great experience except I chose to be a navy corpseman ,and ended up most of my time attached to a grunt unit :( guess I didn't think my career choice through, oh well at least I got to blow things up  semper=fi !!

Yes , but it really depends on which end of the explosion you're on , sending or receiving . I've had quite a few of those explosions a little to close , my ears are still ringing from some of those , and that was 30 yrs ago .

That's scary that your ears Still ring. I had a buddy lose hearing from some artillery. I beleive he was a gunnery sergeant. He now fixes computers for the Military since it's too dangerous for him to be in combat

I was air force , I have 2 brothers that were in the navy. If you are unsure what you want to do in life and want some good experience then the military isnt so bad. But these are strange days and the military as well as the world is changing , this should be a consideration in your decision.

I was lucky to volunteer when I did. End of Vietnam era 1974-1977. Took a lot of pre-entry stuff when I was 16. Officially join 4 days after I turned 17. With some leave time saved up I was still 19 when I got out. Didn't want any responsibility or I would have stayed. If you're single or if the family don't mind I'd go for it. You won't go hungry or be looking for a place to stay or worrying about bills. I better stop there, it's starting to sound too good.

I don't know what I want to do in life. And I certainly don't want to go to college like my family is pushing me to do. I think it will some very valuable experience . And I come from a family with a good amount of military people. My uncle was a general and his last post was at the pentagon hes been retired 6 or so years now.

Yep. I'm single lol. And my family is mad at me but I'm an adult so It's my decision not theirs and there's nothing they can do to prevent me from living my life how I want to. Not to mention another perk to the service is women love guys in uniform haha. Joking

Guy I worked with was in Demolition the first time we went to Iraq. Came back to the States with a mystery itch and he could no longer go in the sun. VA said the soldiers were making it up until the Doctors treating them wound up with the same thing. He still doesn't know what the hell they blew up?
