I emailed my city and one other city about getting permission to detect sidewalk strips and nobody responded Whats the deal?

This has been a really helpful thread...Thank you all for the reinforcement. I called the Mayor's office where I work and she told me she'd have to call me back. She never did. Easier to ask forgiveness than permission it is !

They generally either dont know or figure its not worth their time to respond. If you ask and they actually do respond a lot of the time they say no , not for any real reason , they just feel its safer for them and you if you dont do it.

Your prolem with city responding

Likely the city believes they have other more important business. Stop at the local police station see if metal detecting is not allowed . Or use a small screwdriver and put probe coins down a little ways as I do in my town cut a slit over the coin and losen the soil near it use your fingers careful not to get cut and pick the coin out or a finger and the screwdriver to help hold it against the screwdriver and bring it up and out. Push the slit back together and move on to the next. Still being save ask the police first.

We have at least two parks that are set up for frisbee golf. They would probably run you out for interfering with the frisbee players. After all, they spent all that money on a couple of frisbees.

Have you seen the people that play Frisbee golf? They are hippies, college kids, and generally laid back people.

Why are all these new members asking permission to hunt city parks?

I follow these steps.

Check the governing body's parks and rec site. If there no mention of it in the park rules go for it. If there are no rules or park and rec site. Go for it.

Check for rules at the park on a sign etc.

Ask a police officer that you know in that area. Don't just ask a bureaucrat in the city.

If you are young you might get told something different than the more mature members here. People just worry.

Better to ask forgiveness than permission.

Some of us live in backwards good ole boy towns, nothing like being followed by police only because you are female driving alone, or for those that teenagers, pulling them over just for being young or being cornered by a bunch of "boys" that are bored, can't even go down to the city office with out the whole force smashing their faces against the glass to gauk, yea! and I'm 50! think how much worse it would be for a 20yr old or 30 yr old, one quote I received was a reminder that "people kind of disapear in these mt" so yea, I'm going to take the extra step and get permission, at least in this county. I'm not giving them any reason, that I would have to be alone with one... peace keepers? protectors? Bull!!

Yeah, you probably can't night detect until 2am at a park either, or even go door knocking alone. Guess that advice doesn't apply to everyone.

Post 43 is the best post yet......Beating the dead horse....LOL...funny.

yep, sorry I get so ruffled about the "good ole boys" I forget myself, but you are right, can't do that 2am at the park, heck I get followed if I drive at that time, and been spot lighted for sitting outside on my porch looking at the stars and cooling off during a summer night. Even got a warning for parking slightly crooked on my property because it confused a city worker. I'm thinking umm ok, keep your eye on the street not my yard and you won't get confused. thanks for chimming in.

I live in Georgia. Sidewalk strips are public property that DOT actually owns and the homeowner takes care of, upkeep lets say. Hunt away if you like but always make sure you ask permission from the homeowner. A pissed off homeowner that sees you in what they consider their front yard is really bad for us detectors and is how laws or ordinances get written, it's who you know, they might be the mayors best friend. Parks are usually owned by the county, a few by the state. State owned ones stay away from period! The local parks owned by the county are most always fair game not unless someone has been pestering them to detect and let's call them a "tree hugger", possibly secretary, that takes calls with a mini dress, her boss loves those little dresses, he'll do anything she says, she says to her boss the recreation dept mgr., we don't need someone digging holes in the parks! Then you have created that yourself, done deal!....... You are not trying to hide anything, but bringing all these questions to light will have an adverse effect on your new hobby. Trust me it will! The police dept really doesn't know either in most all cases and will default on the side of what is safe and convenient for them. Most of all do not send emails!!!!!! It could be printed and several people look at it not really knowing the answer and more than likely come up with a conclusion that you will not like! If you feel the need to bring all of this to light to everyone in the county that is in charge and could make changes that more than likely will not be to our benefit in this hobby your detector will suit you better being used as a boat paddle most likely. Go detect....................... Most of all use your head and ask permission from all privately owned property, it just might belong to the secretaries husband....................

If you feel you must ask then I'd suggest getting to know the Town or City manager and ask them personally; I would never send an e-mail, neither would I call their office. That said, the way to get to know them is to get to know the blocker first. Oh, you want to know what or who the blocker is? It's the girl or guy who sits outside his or her office who you must go through first before you can see the manager. Most of the time, if you have gotten to know the blocker, that is as far as you will need to go, she can give you all the answers you need to know.

Whats that suppose to mean? I send emails all the time, and gotten permission? Plus how, or why did this thread get reopened? :?::?: and good point on the sidewalks Thats why I only hunt the ones next to land, or an empty lot, or a abandoned house or building. Plus when I did get told no I don't see a change in the city ordinance about metal detecting.

Some of you are also very paranoid. Sending emails won't always cause a new law to be written.:mad::mad:

Does anybody really expect a public employee to respond to a taxpayer? You exist to support them, no other reason.

REMEMBER DON'T REELECT ANYBODY.
