I decided to leave my metal detecting club

I attempted to join one last year, to remain unnamed, and I was told flat out that I was not welcome.
Okay, so I left and hunt alone.
I doubt I will look to join any other "clubs".

Noted: Irons will now be known as Horse Head!

That would be me.....Do y'all think we'll be hard to spot?.........

I've never understood the 'being part of a club' mentality. Heck, I'm still trying to figure out what the mason are, I just can't wrap my head around it. I have a small group of friends I detect with. We jokingly call ourselves The Massketeers (it was originally just 3 of us, now it's 4). Now that I think of it, those guys owe me dues! It will cost Bottlecaps an oak tree shilling and Flapjack a 3 cent silver. I'll have to go over PhotoRob's photo album to see what his dues will be, lol.

I don't see a point in being in a club. Just one more thing to pay for. Sure it may have it's benefits. I know I have had a tough time finding places to hunt. But I can just search online if I want to.
I bet you'll have more fun just hunting on your own, than with some pre arranged event.

oooh let's not forget the clubs with vultures, whose only purpose is to find out where you found that old coin.........................I always tell them 30 miles in the wrong direction etc. And just for kicks go to that spot and see who is digging...LOL Pull out a pocket of silver coins and tell them you found them all there yesterday.................

I just joined a local detector club, it seems to be a different type of group. So far so good.

About those dues paying for a year when there's only 4 months left. Been there, done that, big club meeting. Dues were now prorated.

Here we go........................

I,m looking for the coins.......................

I've never thought about even looking for a club. But from what you described, it sounds like the one you speak of is set up very poorly. They don't put amateurs vs pro's in most sports or kids vs adults or go-karts vs NASCAR, so why do that in the club? It seems obvious that any fair club event should have "classes" based on experience in any competition. Your reasons for leaving sound very legitimate.

Was there a reason? A reputation, or just straight up they were not taking new members? That seems harsh.

To OP.

Sounds like your getting boned. Did you try speaking with a senior member of the club about the membership fee? Not that 40 is a lot of $. It should be for 12 months, not 3 or 4 because keeping track of it that way would take time an $ for them. They should have just told you to wait until january.

As far as finds go. Dude. If it looks like its UNC, its probably bought.

You like the hobby. Go it alone, with a close friend. I go alone. Leave when I want to. Try another club in a few if you want.

...it was just no effort for new members, they get a round of applause when the become a member and the board asks people to welcome them and that's it..sink or swim time

At least you got that. I swear you were talking about my local club. Just re-joined last month after a couple year hiatus (Stopped going only because I didn't have time for the hobby anymore). Only hit a few meeting the first time around so it's not like anyone said "Hey, Joe is back".

Paid my dues but there was no introduction for new members. Not even a Q&A session or anything that a newbie would find useful. Not looking to stand out but a simple acknowledgement and maybe a chance to tell a little about yourself would be nice so people know what you're about.

I exchanged emails about the dues i was reminded of by them.

I said i was good as id joined in april and they said that it wasn't a 12 month membership but that each year starts in January and their policy was that anyone joining in October or November would get the rest of the year and uptill that month the next year but not those joining before it, that pissed me off to begin with.

I was lucky to join in april but those joining in the summer were going to get fleeced, it wasn't about the amount of money but its unfair to say the least.

Along with the other things i listed it was a great way to get a years dues and then spend them in three months and then get another years dues...basically exploiting the new members for the benefits of the old members who had better chances of winning silver, formed clicks that were stay that way, no programs for new members or those who knew little about the hobby.

It was and is a form of Ponzi scheme where new members dues are being used to buy silver and then the experienced were taking it from finds of the month with little chance of new members getting anything as they learnt the hobby.

when you add to that the ability of some to enter what some saw as obvious bought items to win silver then im thinking selling their 'used' finds and buy yet more.

The whole club is not new member friendly, the older members not mixing, holding onto tips and techniques like their lives depended on it and every challenge squarly benefiting the most experienced members..well i was putting $20 a month into the raffles and was glad to do it, but if theres nothing there to appeal to new people, no help with selecting a machine, selecting a place, techniques to dig, get permissions, find old places.

Heck in one day on here you would get more questions answered then a year in the club and you didn't have to pay $40 for it.

There are good members there but not enough to justify reminaing as a member and feeling my yearly dues were ripped off and those of new members id talked to through the year who joined

I have a lot of hobbies and interests. Never once have I been a member of any club or organization beyond a internet forum. I kinda grew out of clubs and clicks when I left high school.
