I Be Stumped

Went to a local fair grounds with Scrltt64 from here on the boards on Sunday.  It was not the best day of hunting for any of us.  We dug a lot of junk throughout the day but we did manage to find some coins.  It was a great day to be out hunting though and Scrltt64 is one of the best hunting buddies to have.  If you have the chance to hunt with her my wife and I would suggest you do so.

Anyway, I dug this piece and I am not sure what it is.  It is made of solid brass and weighs about 8 oz.  It appears to have a place for some kind of hinge.  I have no idea what it could be and would appreciate any suggestions that you all might have.

Try and clean it up some more and look for any markings we might trace.

Think you're right too. I found one like that about 2 years ago. I made an ashtray out of it.

Inclined to agree on the water meter idea.....could also be an oar lock from a small boat ?

Thanks for all the responses. All attempts to clean it up have failed so it will go into my conversation pieces lot. I may try to make something out of it or maybe just add it to the pile of things that I recycle.
