A half Eagle and an old one too. I remember finding my first mercury dime when I couldn't believe my eyes. I wonder what I might think if I dug a half eagle. Probably that I was dreaming. Way to go, and in a hunted out park too. Congratulations.

Gold coins scratch very easily but when its a new scratch (like the small rim nicks on front rim) it shines through like the sun. Now the bigger scratch on the back is old unless you somehow smeared dirt into it before you got home... and even that would have likely rinsed right out which does not seam possible from your description.
Also even if this coin had no visible scratches the grading companies would almost certainly call it (cleaned) due to hairlines which occur from contact with the soil freezing thawing etc.
Nice recovery considering if you had dug all targets as if you knew it was a gold coin you would have quit this hobby long ago

I always reply the same way and that it's not the most expensive thing I've ever found value wise, but by far the coolest thing I've ever found is a gold coin ..

What the heck...not for everyone especially if you are concerned with target ID. This is for rust infested hunted out locations that have nothing left in sane methods.
