I got outage for 10 hours and a bunch of leaves and branches over my garden but thats normal during any storm in massachusetts.

I think my house being surrounded by trees on this occaision halped us sustain little damage.

Hope everyone else is ok and especially near the coast

sandy

all is well here on the south shore of mass. we experienced some high winds not to much rain although today seems to be the day for rain .we were spared most of the damaging winds that others got. we had no power outages but internet did blink for a second because of a branch tangling with wire to house. other than that we are fine i did however see a large tree go down just off our property which was very cool no damage because it fell into an empty parking lot. our thoughts go out to those who were less fortunate than us from the storm . kevin

This storm is no joke...................Going to make a land fall right on my beach Category don't matter with this baby ,it is huge and could make history .For all the Skimmers out there stay home till this is over ......................no amount of gold is worth getting killed ,this does look verrrry serious .

Ok let me clarify some things Skimmer is a definition of the person that does not hunt on regular bases ,does not have the right equipment for hunting ,for example using gardening trowels for digging on the beach ,does not follow the unwritten rules for filling the holes and removing the garbage of the beach , only comes out after major storms in the winter ,runs fast and in the straight line swinging his machine like a machete LOL so only skimming the top 2 inches of sand Also driven by the grid does not have enough experience or common sense to avoid hunting in the conditions like right now So being friendly, we have to protect them from getting killed by posting warnings If anyone finds them selves matching definition oh well, it is time to either learn things and change to a normal hunter or get mad and call me names :laughin g:

I think a skimmer would be someone who keeps his coil a foot above the sand and swings pretty fast looking for surface finds... BD correct me if I am wrong...

I'm scratching my head here... I don't understand why people who don't even post here are the center of attention... I'm interested in only what our membership posts... I could care less about what happens elsewhere.

I don't question them because they don't exist for me... they don't post here nor will they... treat them like that and you will be alot happier. bottom line who cares what they think... if you are happy posting where you hunt fine... personally I think anyone who posts locations is only hurting themselves and sharing with thousands of eyes on the net which means sooner or later targets will become scarcer and scarcer.

The above post's are quotes. I gotta say, this "beach and water hunting" forum blows harder than the hurricane did. What a bunch of self righteous, pompeous a-holes.

I thought if you were a member of FMDF you were a member of all the forums. After all, what does the "F" stand for?

BD, you must believe that if
"members" don't hunt the sand regularly they're idiots or lousy hunters. Jeeez, I was just going to walk out into a rip tide with my garden trowel and spagetti sifter and go at it. Guess you gotta be a highly educated, fully trained, experienced beach hunter in order to walk along a beach with a metal detector. Gimme a break. Could ya recomend the best flip flops to wear?

I'm not quite sure why it would matter to anyone how some one else hunts, or what equipment/tools they'd use. Simply because someone doesn't use a fancy sifter on a stick doesn't negate the fact that they're still enjoying the hobby.

What a bunch of puddies.

What r you talking about? There is lots of coast not closed or even damaged at all! You can't just walks onto someones property and go , hey I'm here to help you clean up! There needs to be pictures taken by owners and reports made to insurance companies. Plus who r you to say who should and should not go detecting

I've been through quite a few Hurricanes here in Florida, the last thing on my mind after a storm goes through, is hobbies. I've got my own property to clean up. I go over and see what needs to be done for my mother, and usually my younger brother eventually shows up, and help if he needs it as well. I've had the chainsaw out, clearing the street in front of my house, from one end of the block, to the other, both sides, couple of times. Partly, because my driveway is at the end of the median, and becomes a popular turn around, but mostly, it gets traffic moving, so the emergency and cleanup vehicles can get through, and where they are needed most. Would usually like my power restored as quickly as possible.

Really depends on what you value most, a little gold, and a few coins, or the people around you...

They are already out there.....you better hurry!!!:D

i'd suggest that anyone even thinkin of heading to the shore to turn on the news and see the damage, no one will be able to get near that area for several days and that includes many of the homeowners that live there.

Bravo , would you like a cookie as well? Just because I'm talking about hunting ASAP doesn't me or anyone else is turning there back On ppl. I've been out clearing trees since 5 am. For me and my neighbors, but still I'm gonna try to get to the shore ASAP. If that's tomorrow or a week from now. Lol

I might add your situation is not everyone else's, and to me you just sound pompous and condemning, like you know what everyone should b doing, what a joke

Wow Flyguy that is harsh. Some reason those messages got under your skin. I am no expert but I do hunt the beaches a lot. I do not know what a skimmer is but after Sandy passed our beaches there were all kinds of people with walmart metal detectors and different digging tools. They were leaving holes open and their trash next to it. Maybe that is a skimmer? My guess is a skimmer is someone who hunts part time when conditions are the best. That is OK with me because I know they will go home and park the detector until the next storm. Nothing to get angry about unless you are one of them.

Thanks for the clarification HarveyH... That's what I was saying. I have two houses that had damage in the last Hurricane. I can't even get to them, or the beach there on now. All roads and ferries are closed to them. As far as I know,I may not have a house left. There are many people out there that are in the same boat. Neighbors and friends come first!
I could care less about MDing at the moment. All I want to do is get this miss cleaned up and then and only then, will you see me swinging the beaches.

Final check in for me from Central Maryland- Lots of tree and limb damage. Big pieces of stuff laying everywhere. Kids playground equipment blown all over the yard. Power went out last night at 9:45 and came on a few minutes ago so out over 12hrs.

It's still raining now, but the wind is calm. I don't see any problems flood wise except a small farm up the street.

Ok, but last I checked we are on a metal detecting forum, so if you don't like that people are talking about detecting then honestly deal with it, it's a detecting site!

UMM. Last time I looked we were on Sandy check in forum....

On a detecting site. I'm not saying don't talk about sandy, by all means, but do not go condemning ppl for talking about something this whole website is based on .....

This is an event where you see how people can come together and help each other. I grew up on the gulf coast and have delt with a few hurricanes. More recently in Oklahoma we had an ice event followed the next year by a crazy snow event, both of them record setting. In the ice storm people were out of power for weeks. Just seeing how people work together helping their neighbors and total strangers is heartwarming and restores your faith in fellow man.
Early on the focus was "the cut" and sand movement and other opportunities this storm would create. I think the focus has shifted just a bit.
The question is, what can we do for fellow members who are in need of help?

Maybe a little harsh, I admit. Just pisses me off when people make all kinds of assumptions about others abilities and or ethics.

No, I'm not one of "them". I hunt in the dirt. I don't generaly get to play in the sand because, I'm 2 1/2 hours away. I always fill my holes and take out every piece of trash I find. I do that when I'm swinging, fishing, fossiling or just walking in the forrest' and fields. I wanted to go to the area I mentioned because my son lives there and will need cleanup help, as I also mentioned, he lives 3200 feet from the bay. I've also been told, by other members, that the afore mentioned area was pretty well hammered but "if we get a good storm, get down there".

See, here's how I feel about it. If someone on the forum asked for info or help, for instance, they were traveling 2 1/2 hours to come to this area and generaly didn't hunt in the dirt. I wouldn't start throwing around presumptive, disparaging names with knowing absolutely nothing about that individual. Instead, I'd find out what they were interested in finding and recommend likely sites they could try.

As a new member, I've only posted a few times. Primarily in "coin and relic". This, in my opinion, shouldn't preclude me from jumping into another forum regarding something that I have little or no experience in and asking for help from my fellow FMDF members, when the need or opportunity arises. I thought that was what FMDF was all about. If someone knows about the areas I've requested info on and didn't want to post any info on the web, they could simply send me a PM. Not start shouting about "secret spot's". It is after all about 25 or 30 miles of primarily barren coast line. It illustrates to me a level of greed and self centeredness that I just hate to see in the human species.

I just don't think about going out and having fun, while knowing there are so many people, that could use a little help getting their lives back on track, after a devastating storm. I live in a small town, and have enjoyed small town living all my life. Putting family and neighbors, the community first, is more important. Values are taught by example. And what I wrote, was related to metal detecting, because it involves how our neighbors and community view our hobby. Most everyone around you, while you are out having fun filling you finds pouch, is looking at what they lost, and how much it's going to cost to make things right again. How many hours they'll spend cleaning up, and making repairs. Having fun won't even be an option for many, for weeks.

I just can't see going out, the moment the storm has safely passed, when there are so many other things that need to be taken care of first. Besides, the people you help, and their neighbors, could hardly deny you a request to hunt their yard later on. Or when you are in serious need, they wouldn't hesitate to step in and help out.

I never got into this to get rich, or get into a race to recover everything. before anyone else beats me two it. But that's me, and I don't have thousands of dollars worth of equipment, and still making credit card payments on my investment.

Good luck on your hunt then, and hope you are appropriately rewarded for your effort.

Maybe a little harsh, I admit. Just pisses me off when people make all kinds of assumptions about others abilities and or ethics.

The above statement is most of what most of us guys are talking about.
But there is so much more to the story it's comical. This bit about being
a skimmer started on another site not here. From my 2 years here I find most
members are great and don't judge and do go out of there way to help.

At this other site, well I'll have to send you a PM when I have time, thats if you
don't mind and want see what we are referring to. I can't do it now I need to tend to some things of importence...

The Quote that Craig starts off with "I'm scratching my head here" has NOTHING to do with the Skimmer thing....none! :nono: He'll charm in when he gets his power back on.
