How Long Before There Is A Call To Modify Us Coins?

With this "coin shortage" I hope they stopmaking cent coins, stop printing $1s and $5s and make some $1 and $5 coins. That would be sweet and would make things very interesting!

What I don't "get", is, if there really IS this "shortage", why are stores and other institutions NOT begging people to spend coins with them? They did in '64, why not now? Very odd. :?:

Paper money is "dirtier" than coins. They def need to get rid of $1 and $5 bills and replace with coins. If people had to use them, they would. $1 coins always been some goofy design. Make a cool design, nice sized 1 and 5 coins already

Get rid of 1 and 5 dollar bills

I think that is how Canada did it , got rid of 1 and 2 dollar bills and the coins will have to be used .

dirty paper money

How is paper money dirtier than coin?

Paper money can reportedly carry more germs than a household toilet. And bills are a hospitable environment for gross microbes: viruses and bacteria can live on most surfaces for about 48 hours, but paper money can reportedly transport a live flu virus for up to 17 days. It's enough to make you switch to credit.

Maybe I should start “laundering” my cash.

Edit: this is sarcasm, of course.

Yeah theres industry pressure by vending machine owners for sure, but the reason the populace didnt adopt the $1 coins is purely a personal decision. I dont worry one whit about vending costs- i base my decisions on what works for Me. (and if the vending cost rises too far, i dont buy from them. not my problem).
i prefer to carry bills because i dont carry coins (tho i want everyone else to! :D)

For those folks outside the Philadelphia/South Jersey area, WaWa is iconic. And it’s not a small, two-bit operation. You pretty much can’t go more than two miles without running across another WaWa store in the area - over 900 locations across 5 states. They aren’t begging for coins because it’s “all just made up” - they really are having a hard time.

My sister and brother-in-law own a diner in New Jersey, and they are struggling to get sufficient coinage for day-to-day ops. They’re limited to makeshift outdoor dining and curbside pickup right now - essentially running at 50% revenue at best. If they get to reopen for indoor dining anytime soon, they are considering incentives to encourage exact change or cashless payment.

Good for them.

But nothing like that in the stores I use in my area yet.

Just the same old cash refusals and "cards only" - Unless you use an attended checkout. For now, anyway.

I was allowed to use cash at our Menards today tho.

interesting, in NY businesses can not refuse cash. Which is good because some people do not have the ability to get a credit card. This whole forced to do purchases with a bank so they can make money is bs.
