How long before 1st silver coin find - an unscientific study

Since this thread has been bumped back up....

I finally found my first "full" silver coin the other day - a 1937 quarter. Before that, I'd found a war nickel that contained 35% silver. I got back into detecting last December, so I'd estimate it took me about 40 hours to find the quarter.

Thanks,
NuSarpy

10 minutes after I put together my 1st detector ace 250 I got a unreadable SLQ in my back yard that's:lol: when I got hooked on this hobby :whoohoo:

On my third hunt so about 10 hours in to find both a piece of silver jewelry and a war nickel...I just put my finds into my pouch then look later so i cant be sure which came first...one inside a tot lot one just outside...still nice to break the duck

3000+ coins

I found over $400 in clad (3000+) before I found my first silver coin, a 1952? rosie. Hunting mostly totlots and parks with the Ace 250.
Now in the last month I have found two more silver dimes, one's a merc. These were both with the AT Pro. I believe the 250 might have found one but not the other. Also, these were found at a park built in the 1800's and a private house.
I'm asking 2-3 homeowners per week for permission, so far it's about 50/50.

Took me about 6 months. I started in the fall of 2009 and detected a little. Finally pulled one in the spring of 2010. Since then I've pulled almost 300. The more you do it the more you learn.

Took me about one month to find my first silver coin. Dug 4 Silver Rosies that day. Still my best day ever for silver count. Figuring about 2 hours per day that comes to about 60 hours before my first silver.

F2 silver

Finally got my first silver with the F2. Location was my problem. I was hitting newer parks. Went to a pretty old football stadium that has been hit before but nobody crawled wwaaaayyyy under the bleachers metal braces. First one I crawled under got my first silver 1950 Rosie 4 to 5 inches down. Probably took 50 hours.

You know, I was thinking about this poll while I was out hunting yesterday, and came to the conclusion that while the results, or averages on hours might be interesting, there's not actually anything to be learned from it... The reason being that it's not how many hours you hunt... It's *where* you hunt. Getting a silver coin means getting a coin that is at least, what... Pre-1960? It's related to age. So a dude hunting in a subdivision or modern parks/schools is going to put in many more hours before finding silver than the guy who goes out and hunts the yard of his hundred year old house... Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the survey - I actually have enjoyed reading everyone's responses... I just don't think there are any conclusions to be drawn. But maybe that's what you meant by unscientific...:) As they say in real estate... Location, Location, Location.... HH, BB

Still Looking for first Silver so I am a Newbie

Even though I have a bag full of change its all modern save for one 1947 Nickel.:?:

If you do not count my early experience with an MD, it was one of my first hunts with a fellow member here. I would say 5-6 months.

It took me 28 days to find my first silver. It would have been sooner, but I got my detector in January during the hard freeze.

With silver being so rare for me to find, each one is almost as exciting as the first!

Thanks to the forum for making it so easy for me to answer this question... "find all threads started by HighFlyer". Easy peasy!

Exactly my feelings as well..

There was another "how long did you hunt till you dug a silver" thread..

I posted it is more of a location thing than a time thing..

A lot of people find silver on there first hunt in their own yard, because they live in an old house that has not been pounded yet..

Took me about 40 hrs to get on the right location..

<*)))>{

Just found my first, a 1944 war nickel, on my 31st hunt. So maybe 70 to 80 hours of detecting to get it.

6 Months?....did you wait 5 months before you started using the detector or did you forget to switch it on?....

Took me 6 months before I found my first silver.

I don't know what your illusion is, but not every area has handfuls of silver coins laying around. In THREE years I have found 2 silver coins.

Some areas, people were poor farmers who bartered for most things and didn't have money to lose.

It is MORE about LOCATION than it is about swing time!!!

3/8/2002 ... 1941 Merc dime after 45 minutes detecting in my yard. First hunt was 30 mins. merc came 15 minutes into 2nd hunt.

Had hunt #432 today and it is now 131 silvers later :)
