Guitar Appreciation Thread

Here's a little video a buddy of mine put together several years ago. It was filmed in the campground at a music festival. If you listen really closely, you can hear a dude driving tent stakes in the background. The guitar is a my Taylor 510. I have some more. LOL but you get the idea.

Wow! I'm impressed with the number of guitar players here. I played a little as a teenager and into my early 20s, then life took over. I bought myself a Schecter Solo-6 Custom in 2010 and started learning blues guitar since it is the foundation of early rock. The recently purchased Fender Mustang III v.2 amp allows me to emulate many different amps and pedals so is a good solution for my needs. Mostly it is just a way to relax and express myself. I don't play in front of other people except for my wife.

Recently my music interests have veered into rather eclectic things and I wrote a tool to compose non-tonal music based on Babbitt's work in the 50s - 70s.

Not to everyones taste https://soundcloud.com/timothy-cook-1/sets/serial-circle

I also use Band-in-a-Box to create songs and backing tracks.

I don't have any public recordings of my guitar playing right now.

I've been playing since I was 6 (51 now). Over that time, I've owned 54 guitars, 17 at one time. Now I'm down to only 9, and I'm always looking for another.

My current quiver of gear...

'77 Bradley Les Paul Custom
'07 PRS CE22 Maple Top
'11 PRS McCarty 58 Artist
'04 Ltd EC-1000FM ASB

'03 Epi Les Paul '56 Gold Top P90
'04 Fender Tele MiM

Some very nice stories and guitars in this thread.

Hey Auriemma, I see you have experience with PRS. I've been thinking about adding a PRS to my collection because I've heard they play and sound great. What's a good model to watch for?

Detector, How much do you want to spend?
My CE22 with bird inlays (rare) was $700 used (a steal, normally $900-1200).
My McCarty 58 Artist was $2100 new (another bargain during the Guitar Center PRS dump). These are both made in the USA.
I've also owned 4 SE models (all bought for under $300)

You can pick up a used SE model (made in Korea) fairly inexpensively $250-500, used CEs range $900-1200, 22 fret being lower, 24 fret being higher. Used CUs run $1000-1500 (22 fret of 24 fret as before). The CU (Custom 22 or 24) are nice, the DGT is popular as well. PRS came out with the S2 line (USA made with imported hardware). Do you want a normal top, 10 Top (Top 10% of their best woods), Artist (Top 1%), or something custom made from the wood library?

With PRS is gets nuts very fast. I would suggest you find a shop that stocks a few of them and play them for yourself (my advice for ANYONE buying ANY guitar). IMHO, PRS is a 5 star product. Build, fit and finish, hardware, and pickups, are all top notch, far better than Gibson quality. They play extraordinarily well. but that's me. Others have called them sterile sounding and over the top looks wise. You decide...

No shops around here. I'd either have to buy from Feebay or Guitar Center or some other shop. Price doesn't sound that bad. I paid $2,400 for my LP including shipping. Like I said I'm a flame top type guy. And I want the bird inlays.

Someday I'll take pics of an old Gibson I've got. At some point I'll probably sell it.
It's a blond Quilted Maple top ES-350, w/original Gibson hard case, and a same era original Gibson amp.

If you're anywhere near Lansing, you can take it to Elderly Instruments. I believe they do consignment sales and they would at least be able to give you a good idea of what it should sell for. It's a great shop. When I worked in Lansing in the mid to late '90's I used to stop in there all the time!

Elderly is a great shop to buy from, so is Wilcutt. Both are knowledgeable and can walk you through which you want.

Like I said, the Custom model is very popular, as well as DGT and McCarty. Beyond those, the cost gets very serious.

Happy hunting.

Ya notice how in the original post "Strat" was the only guitar mentioned?

Just sayin' :)

I'm having surgery on my right thumb today, so when I can, I'll post up pix of my guitar and amps. They are oldies and I am the original owner.

I started playing around age 9, took lessons for 6 years, did the high school band thing, got pretty good, then during one drunken Fraternity Party, I managed to crush my left hand. Bones in my ring finger are fused together...I can do a 3 finger Barre chord

I can still noodle on the guitar, but I now pretty much suck.

That made me think of Django Reinhardt. If you listen to the way he plays (played), and read the sheet music at the same time, you realize he played differently because of his hand. To me, it really was one of the main things that made him stand out.

I could still noodle on the guitar, but I now can't even remember a major scale...

That is because the poster, me, isn't a guitar guy. I was re-directing folks who had hijacked one of my posts. That isn't to say I don't appreciate a fine guitar, just not a player myself. I am glad that this thread has taken off. I may have to start other appreciation threads.

Giving the lungs a workout with some Eagles. Didn't get the sync quite right on the last lead import but hey what can I say.
