Hey everyone, got out to the ballfield for a little over an hour, got the coins and lock above the bullnose ring. One car showed up, and then two, I look up and there's a dozen  its little league season. Took off from there and hit a small common type area. Ten minutes in, I'm approached by a woman that looks very familiar. As soon as she said something I knew who she was. Same woman that called the cops on me three seasons ago for detecting the town common. She says "you can't dig in the parks", I knew she most likely already called the police. She over there taking pictures of my Camry, license plate  I said to her, I pay taxes to use this public space just like everyone else, what's it matter if I'm detecting or not? This guy over here is letting his dog sh*t all over the park but in detecting and it's an issue? She said this is a PARK! She was almost taking it personally. I said I do a good job making it look like I wasn't even here and I take my trash out with me. She just wasn't having it, anything I said was mute. I left right then before losing my cool and the police actually showing up. I debated going to the police station and getting something on paper that there's no bi-laws in this town stating you can't dig in parks, and then go back  but the sun was about to set and I had a colonial spot In mind. Dug lots of relics in the colonial field, a fired musketball, brooch, rivets, suspender clip and some other stuff. Did a live dig on a 12-45/13-46 that ended up being a clad quarter. Look at what the fertilizer does to coins, even clad. That's a 1994 you can barely even make out lol. Fun day. Just had to get that off my chest. Second time she ran me off public space, where I was NOT in the wrong. Thanks for looking and happy hunting everyone!

I hear ya man thats how I felt for sure, but I really didn't want to make a scene and give our hobby a worse rep than it already has lol if and when I do go back there with a document stating I'm doing nothing wrong, I have a few choice words for her. One is mind your own! You have anything better to do than harass people utilizing a park?!?! Unbelievable lol I bet her husband was sitting on the couch like what did I get myself into hahaha happy hunting bud!

yo C

Imagine if that busybody phoned the coppers everytime a dog dumped in that area.

Personally I would have just moved on and came back at a later time....maybe bring a loud barking dog with you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck....and peace on your next outing!

There is always people like that, just have to tell her the world don't revolve around her and she needs to mind her own business. Keep cool and just let her know you are going to do it no matter how bent out of shape she gets. Anyhow... nice digs.

Nice treasure man!......you handled that alot better than i might have...
Ppl. Like that must have Absolutly NO LIFE. You know..
But if im in the right, and getting harrassed like that i dont back down....but thats just me
Lifes too short! And we are out detecting to have fun and find good coins etc..
I dunno,,,,just find out for sure you are ok with the law and if she still keeps harassing you
I would call the law myself n tell the #,"$@ ch. To leave me alone or I WILL press charges for harassment..
Just sayin.... :-)

Chin up!....... Ya did great!

I think her sister takes care of a beach and park here in CT where I hunt.. she has thrown rocks at a friend of mine water hunting saying she was going to lock the gate on him... good job on the IH and merc.

Love those Injuns and silver is always good!

It's amazing how many people have nothing better to do than to be miserable and ruin it for everyone else. I've been to this spot for hours and nobody said anything. I dug a nickel trifecta there, no silver but it's there. Problem is I keep getting interrupted lol I'm gunna get it on paper and go back, I guarantee you guys will hear an update! Thanks for the looks and happy hunting!

cellrdwellr, I love the green patina on the IH ! As for your encounter with the busy-body gal, all I can say is: Better you than me.  :p

Nice Finds!

There's multiple problems with this:

a) the issue the lady was griping about was "digging" in the park. Not the act of swinging a detector ("hunting"). In other words, while it's true that cellrdwellr might get confirmed that there's no prohibitions on md'ing , yet .... the gripe was about "digging". And I'll bet you dollars to donuts that there IS something in city code about "digging". Even if the wording is "deface" or "alter", it will end up boiling down to a debate of semantics. And .... you risk ending up on the loosing end of that. Ie.: merely swatting hornet's nests, when the reality is, only a single lady seems to care.

b) by asking them to "put it in writing" (as you suggest) is also problematic. That might be the FASTEST way to get a "no". Because by asking any city person to "put that in writing", is merely going to conjur up legal hassles. They'll have to "forward that on to the city attorney", blah blah. And ... you can guess where this might go

If I understand cellrdwellr's post correctly, this singular griper hadn't been seen for 3 yrs (?) . So .... she might just be a person to (as he did) give lip service to, and ... simply avoid her. Rather than running around trying to "get her over-turned" and "prove her wrong", etc.... Because he might end up opening a can of worms he doesn't want to.

VERY GOOD POINTS, TOM . I stand corrected on this matter. nicely worded.

Yes Tom it's been a few years, I used to live in this town before I met the wife for 10+ years. I know the police force pretty well. They just drive by. I need to somehow convince this lady that calling the cops won't get her anywhere, the cops really could care less, but when they get the call they have to respond. The dispatcher I'm familiar with just happens to be on vacation this week so I won't be able to talk to her til next week. These spots produce, I'm 99% certain there's no by laws. We will see what Amy has to say next week. Will update this thread when I have further information. I want it to the point where I can start hunting there, and when she calls the police, they tell her I'm not doing anything wrong. High hopes but this area has produced barbers, seateds, and even a copper campaignn token from 1840. I refuse to let it go lol.

In all those years since you last got griped at by miss-lookie-lou, how many hunts have you gone w/o her hassle ? Because if it's just a once-in-a-blue moon gripe from her, and many hunts in-between where you never see/saw her, then ..... Is it really something you "need to convince" her of ? Maybe just easier to blow her off and .... run the risk that once in 3 yrs you might bump into her ?

If I were getting seateds and barbers, I would certainly be going back too :D And you wanna be careful that somehow .... taking your concerns back to city hall "for further clarification to show miss lookie-lou" doesn't back-fire into some can of worms where .... well .... you know.

How about hunting at night ?

Thanks Tom I appreciate the knowledge on the subject. I'm not losing sleep over it lol there's plenty of other places to hunt, but I need to do this  I just can't wait to see her walk away all pissy cause I'm not required to leave. She will recognize me, she may not even confront me face to face again and just call the police directly. Either way I'll be ready next time  happy hunting!
