I’ve been wanting to find one forever, and didn’t know I even got one till I cleaned my finds.Got out for a short hunt again, hit a old playground and got this old Saltsburg Pennsylvania coal miners trade token. To think that poor guy worked all day to make it,and then lost it.lol..Looked it up and they were made from 1912 to 1924..

The real nice one is a picture I took off of the internet, mines the crusty one.lol

Cool find! Come over to the city or some of the immediate suburbs and you will find quite a few different trade tokens!

The worked all day thing is so True.. almost a tragedy.. Think about how much YOU make a day and then think about how bummed you would feel if suddenly you reached into your pocket and couldn't find it.. You would be retracing your steps everywhere and going home empty both in spirit and probably in the stomach.

I bet somewhere the guy who lost it is either cussing you right now or pretty thankful you found it for him.

GREAT Find Woodbutcher !!

Why did pass out trade tokens instead of currency back in the day?

Not sure but it was easier maybe

I think so too.lol

Yes, I grew up in Saltsburg. Class of 2007. I live up around McIntyre now. That is such a cool piece of local history!

Very cool find, Wood!! I think tokens are often better than coins - great local history to research with tokens!

It was pretty common, especially with the coal companies back then - frankly, it was a way to fleece their own workers! They paid their employees with the token, which was only redeemable at the company owned store. That way, the coal companies created their own local monopolies, and there was often a high markup on the goods for sale. They basically got their employees coming and going  There's a pretty good overview on the wiki here.
