Ok, I bought a swarm mx100e detector. I know it's not name brand but figured it will get me started anyway. What settings do I need to use as far as sensativity it goes up to 8. I'm pretty sure I want the discrimination to not find iron as there are several nuts and bolts around my yard where I'll be trying it out. I do have a titanium ring to find at moms but other than that I'm just looking for coins around the yard and driveway for now playing around.

Hey Brian,...first let me apologize for being such a dick when you were asking for help the other day...I re-read my reply and put myself in your shoes...yes, I was a dick alright..I apologize!..

I think that rig you got should find your Son In Laws ring...experiment a little with the machines settings...outdoors and away from the house, or you will get all sorts of feedback...

I would suggest to not go with full power 'sens' setting, or it will pick up all sorts of ambient metals and drive you insane...(I'd start at half sens) Try to find a stable setting where you can flash the coil over a nickel and still hear it...You will want to see if this rig likes a certain swing speed and hits...sometimes too slow is worse than too fast...so see what the swing speed is...

You also want to get your ear attuned to that nickel signal, or any solid 'tight' tone..even if its 'iron' (a lot of rings can be in the iron or foil range) so just practice a bit.....if that ring is a fresh drop, and you know about where it is, I bet you can find it! Most people crawl along too slow...all you will need is a screwdriver to fish around in the grass under a nice tone, or maybe even eyeball it...

Its tough to give you a good set-up program, for we dont know your yard and what might be there...it could be full of old nails or pieces of aluminum flashing or built on foundry slag...plus, none of us here are familiar with your detector much....try to set up on site...drop a penny or a tab or a nickel and set up to those, then key in on any tight ping in the considered 'drop zone'...holler back if you succeed or need more advice...also have a look at youtube and see if theres any vids on your rig that may be of help! Drop some clad on the dirt and sweep over it...hear what a Dime or Q sounds like? See how high you can get your coil over it and still hear the tone? There you go! You may just find some sweet old Silver today! GL and HH and please report back!

Your fine mud. I knew when I bought it it wasn't high end, but for the things I had planned I figured it would do. I just bought a house and 26 acres that the boundary should have survey pins but figured they were covered up and that's the main thng I got it for. The ring is just to see if I can find it. They already replaced it anyway but it will have sentamental value so I'd like to find it. No big deal if I don't. The other reason is I'm looking for a new hobby, need something to keep my occupied when I have free time. That is a Long story behind that, but I'm on top of that problem now. Just don't want to go down that road again. And this unit if I like the detecting world I can always upgrade, if I don't I'm not out a lot of money. But I do thank you for your replies and welcome anymore you may have. I'll keep ya posted on the things I find, unless I find that 2lb gold nugget at which time no one will here from me. Lol.

Brian, I'm glad we are good! Thank you for that, I was troubled about it...

Theres a lot to this Sport more than the rig a guy runs, Its the "Indian not the bow" scenario, and location helps a lot too....Last guy I remember that was in your shoes in Kentucky, a guy named "Fyrftr" got an introductory rig, got out and started diddling around on some old KY dirt, and Great Merciful Damn! He was finding all sorts of old silver! Stacks of the stuff! The kind of coins a lot of long time hunters dream about!

Life has a way of shutting down a lot of guys before we really get to live, this Sport will add life to you, as it has for me...I was about to die 6yrs ago, and looking forward to it truth be told, then I ran into a guy who was out detecting, I was always interested in the concept, but never took the time to to get into it, always head down nose to the grindstone, pulling that plow, raising a Family, you know the drill...He took the time to talk and show me some things...told me where to go and what to buy, so the next day, I did!

I didnt know nothing! Just got out and hit it! Didnt know settings or anything, in way over my head, found 7c at a boatramp! But stayed at it and found a Forum and started reading and asking questions like you are doing, watching youtube vids and all that...so thats about it..I think you will be good at this, and I KNOW for sure it will be good for you...

I will help you in anyway I can...'pay it forward' so to speak..you cant find nothing sitting around in the house, you can rest when you are dead, Time and Gold wait for nobody in particular...so Good Luck and HH..I hope we meet someday afield...your friend,
