My 7 month old carrot has developed a rattle and it's not the ring. Also intermittent falsing a bit even with new batteries. Anyone else have this happen? I just registered it with Garrett and looks like a return. Any advice would be appreciated.

Intermittent falsing with a carrot and other pinpointers is normal here in our mineralized clay. However, if it's behaving different from how it used to perform, then I would send it in for repair. I do get a rattle in mine from time to time due to small chunks of dirt getting behind the speaker "grill".

I was going to suggest checking behind the speaker slots as well. Full battery gave some great advice, if it's not acting normal, send it in. Garrett is REALLY good about stuff like this.

Mark I'm assuming you have looked in the battery compartment to see if the small Phillips screw holding the guts in the PP is either loose or missing. Either one could cause the rattle. You could also take the unit apart to see if something inside has broken free. That little screw is the only thing holding the control board in. If I remember right, if you take out the screw in order to remove the insides you have to press the button in to allow the control board to slide out. If it's still within the warranty period I would send it in.

It has been a long time since I had work done on a carrot but I think I just called them and got a authorization repair number before I shipped it. Turnaround time was amazingly quick. Just a couple of days. You won't be without it long. They answered the phone on the first ring. I did a market survey back in January and the carrot out sells the second most popular pinpointer by a 20 to 1 or more ratio. The pinpointer second in sales to the carrot is the XP Mi6 and it is a very distant second.

Thanks for all the advice. Definitely has something loose inside so I'm going to call Garrett today.

So I have taken these apart a few times for a rattle. The rattle is my cases has been several reasons over the years. Reason one was that i wore through the tip and dirt and rocks got it. Reason two is the business end of the carrot that has the coils can pop out of its slots to hold it in place. Reason 3 was as others mentioned the button/speaker getting stuff in it.

"Wore through the tip" That's impressive!

Wore through on a Garrett? That's some heavy rubbing to get that down to that point.

good old western ny....2 inches of top soil followed by rock and clay. When I used to be able to get out detecting more I would dig hundreds of holes each outing. It adds up over a couple years time.
