So pastor Bob and I set out on another door knocking adventure. We found some great stuff and I finally found an SLQ!! Before the SLQ find I was feeling very defeated. I started off the day finding my oldest Barber coin a very worn 1893 quarter. Not even 2 minutes after I found it the home owner approached me and said he would like to have the coin. I attempted to pay him for it but he declined. I was devastated. That was the only silver coin we found in his yard. I was so caught off guard as that has never happened to me before I did not know how to react. If ths home owner would have told us he wanted to keep the coins we found we would have just thanked him for his time and moved on to the next yard. What made things even worse was when he went on to say his teenage grandson buys and sells coins on Ebay and would likely sell this coin. It is probably a $5 coin but I keep all of my finds and it is worth much more to me. Oh well I chalked it up to a lesson learned. I will definitely handle that situation differently next time. I was so surprised and it happened so fast I didn't even ask to get a picture of barber quarter before I handed it over. At least I salvaged the day by checking off one of my top bucket listers later that day. I have been trying to find an SLQ for years. Her are some pics of the finds and the video with live digs and the exchange with the home owner. Thanks for looking!

OMG Are you kidding me !!

I am so glad you got that on Video !!

Sorry for your loss.. maybe drop off a note to the Guy explaining if his Grandson is actually going to sell it on Ebay to have him save the fees and give you a chance to buy it..

Really nice stander! Ive only found 2 in like 8 or 9 years, and they were merely inches away from each other... Congrats on a solid day out with Bob!

The guy was pretty clueless about coins and detecting, but when he asked if you found anything good I'd think there's a good chance he knew you did. I've always assumed that's the price you pay for filming. That is, the risk of drawing attention to good finds, whether that's the beach or a yard. You find something good, and literally make a production out of showing it to the camera, spraying it off, calling across the yard about it, showing it to a hunting partner, etc...

To be clear, I'm not criticizing you. Good for you for being honest. I'm just thinking I'd be more comfortable filming if the details were clear before the hunt. On the other hand, if it's been advantageous in all of your other hunts to not get those details worked out, then count this one loss against all the others you've been able to keep.

I wouldn't have had a problem with the guy had he just said he would like to give it to his grandson. Take a photo of the coin and hand it over. Most people never think there's anything of value in their yard, so they don't bother to work out the details. So, at that point, I would have made it clear that--"in exchange for the time, skill, and effort to find that coin for him"---you're keeping anything else you find. If he says no, then you walk. But, when he said the coin might get sold on Ebay, I would have walked regardless.

Nice find! I havent checked out the video yet, but I might have offered him 5 bucks for it, if I really wanted to hold on to it for my finds collection!

He offered to buy it from him and the homeowner said no. The homeowner had no idea what it might be worth--he didn't even know it was a US coin--but what's clear is that he knew it was worth something. The detectorist could have offered twice its value and the homeowner would have suspected he was getting a bad deal.

Exactly he had no idea what the coin even was. As another member said I would not have minded him giving it to his grandson to add to his collection. But his grandson is 17 and buys coins from flea markets and pawn shops to sell for profit on Ebay according to his grandfather. We talked about it for a good 10 minutes off camera. He was asking me about coin values and pricing to help his grandson. I told him I was no expert on pricing or values as I rarely buy coins I just collect the ones I find. It was all very disappointing but I will be better prepared.

Thanks! I am watching Ebay for it. I might buy another one anyway just to put in my finds book.

Very nice...other than having to give it up :(

What settings did you use?
Thanks. I was in park 1 sensitivity at 22 iron bias 1 speed 7. Auto ground tracking. That is what I usually run for silver.

Congrats on the old silver quarter! But in the whole scheme of things your personal character stock price just went up 10 fold if not more. I feel that is worth more than a twenty five cent coin. Well done again with your silver finds and posting of them!

Thanks I appreciate that and I agree in the end it is just a quarter.

On the high note you did not dig more for him to tale away. I had that happen once to me and I take care now on what I show. Looks like you recovered nicely though with your first SLQ. Some great hunting Ben. Trapper

First of all I would like to say congratulations on the SLQ.
Sorry to hear about your Barber. I know how it feels. Back in the mid-to-late 90s I was metal detecting in an old man's yard. He said go ahead but you will not find anything people didn't have money back then. I found a couple ihps and my first slq in his yard. When I was finishing up he said hey did you find anything? With excitement I said yes I did! He said let me see what you found as soon as my hand open the owner snatch them out and said thank you and walked away. I said hey I found those thank you for letting me metal detector yard. He said my yard my coins. I learned a lesson that day.
