Folks in Wisconsin?

I'm from a very small town called Grand Marais, it's 65 miles east of Munising and it is also the eastern entrance of Picture Rocks National Park.

IMshooter are there any good places to MD in Iron Mountain? In Green Bay we can't MD in the parks as the city says it's a no no. If you do a friendly police officer has a talk with you. Not many places to go around here. I also have 2 kids one 14 and one 6.
Trying to get them into MD with me.

puddlejumper are there any good places to MD in crandon? I have never been there sounds like a nice little town. How far is it from GB.

Kc,
i love grand marais. my family was one of the families that helped build all the buildings on main street when they came over from Finland. Think there was even a Mannisto tavern way back in the day.
As far as MD'ing around here...there are a few parks to hit. Quite a few ball diamonds and soccer fields and a couple of beaches. I've never seen anyone but myself and my friend and one old timer out swinging but someone must be hitting the beaches because I never find anything when hitting the sand. Not even trash.

Up here you can hunt anything that's public. There's one park I hunt that has a beach, some woods that used to be part of the park about 80 years ago and another area that used to be picnic grounds that are grown over now. Would be fun to have you and your friend come and hit it with me. I literally have spent 4-6hrs a day there and never stop finding stuff.

When you said land of world champions, the first thing that popped into my head was world championship off road racing, aka Crandon off road racing. It's a bit of a hike from Green Bay but I bet there would be a ton and a half of clad at the race track if a person could get permission.

yah...at Crandon you'd be better off with a fine tooth rake and then just MD your piles of sand/dirt. There has to be a ton of clad/jewelry there. Heat + Booze + Suntan lotion=alot of stuff falling to the ground.

I will let you know when I come up after the snow is gone. I hate winter. I have to pick up a new MD from our local Garrett dealer and learn how to use it. I have a cheap MD I bought for the kids to use maybe I can use that one as it works quite well. I want to get an ace 350 but the dealer said they are on back order.

If you like to read about Grand Marais a new history book just came out last year about the town. I think you can go to the Grand Marais web site to find out how to get a copy.
My family have lived in GM for four generations. My grandfather on my dads side retired as a captain in the coast guard in GM. My grandfather on my mothers side was a commercial fisherman and had seven fishing tugs operating out of the harbor. When the railroad went out so did the commercial fishing and the logging industry. It's hard to live in GM as there isn't much work there and that's why I live in Green Bay. At one time in the late 1800 GM had over 20 bars in town and now there's only two bars, one gas station and one grocery store. I still try to go up there when ever I get the chance as my mother is still alive at 89 years old. I want to spend as much time with her as she is have health issues. I have to live in GB but my heart will always be in the UP.

First I would call these guys since a Garrett is probably going to originate from there anyways. They are super nice and have piles of stuff that isn't listed on their kind of crappy old site. I think they even have some used machines if your interested (not ace 350 though, I don't think) http://outdoorout.com/
Next I would call Bart at Big Boys Hobbies to see what you can get one for because he seems to have some pretty good deals. http://www.bigboyshobbies.net/

thanks for the lead on the history book! my family came from Finland to GM. my great uncles built quite a few of buildings on the main drag. I recall one place with log booths or log accents, small restaurant/diner...my great uncle hand carved all the wood in there. And there used to be a place called Mannisto Tavern that belonged to the family way back..
Sounds like your ties to GM run deep! my family migrated to the Munising area from GM and bought a few sq miles of land to log. But yah, no work in many small towns in the U.P.

yah i thought the snow would be gone in a few days...now they're forecasting some heavy wet snow on wednesday...I've heard 8-12", 6-8", 5-10"...which means,2" of snow that lasts for a few hours then melts..hopefully it comes with a ton of rain to melt the snow that is here and soften the ground up.

IMshooter,
I asked my mother if she remembered a tavern called Manisto bar. She is 89 so she is a walking history book of GM. She remembered the bar and it's the tavern across from the gas station. She thinks your uncle was married to a woman named Ida who later became a neighbor and good friend to my mother and dad. Ida remarried a man named Raymond Carpenter who was a good friend of my dad.

It sure is a small world.

Here comes the snow again! 4 to 6 inches tonight. I don't think we will ever get out to MD.

Puddlejumper,
Thanks for the information but I want to keep my money in GB as I want to support our local businesses. Our economy isn't doing to good here.

No ones economy is doing good these days, so it's cool of you to keep the money local

kc, you're right. my great uncle did have a wife named Ida. Very small world indeed.

this snow is ridiculous. birds are outside flying around and chirping and it's snowing like crazy out.

Winter doesn't seem so bad after watching what's going on in Japan. Keep the people in our prayers as many people will have died.
