fur trading posts
I was surprised too. I mean Wisconsin doesn't exactly have the history the east coast has. But when I looked into it, I was surprised to find that there were quite a few French fur trading posts from the early 1800s here, and that Europeans had been traversing Wisconsin and trading with the Native American tribes here since the mid/late 1600s. Here is a cool map that shows some locations of fur trading posts in Wisconsin: http://www.pchswi.org/maps-geology/maps_graphics/American_Era_fur_trading_posts_1815-1850.pdf
