FMDF Fundraiser

Oh....so does that count as my first bid, or can I change it later?

You have me all confused. LOL!

When we decide to start putting stuff up for bid, you will post your bid under that particular items thread. And yes, if you get outbid, you can bid again.

As of right now, there is noting up for silent auction.

I like the idea. You could even list some on ebay to get more people looking at the auctions. (sorry if someone else mentioned this, I didnt read all the posts)

No, I don't think we want to do eBay... too many fees.

We need to "cutout" the middleman.

Sounds like a plan

Well, the start of a plan. A page would have to be set up, Donations would need to be photographed and a rough estimate of shipping costs should be included and should be paid by the winner of each item. His donation should reflect what he or she would pay including shipping. As most of us have bid on ebay, we realize properly packaging and sending off items can add up to a few bucks. Ideas should be tossed around and perfected. I think the possibility of lurkers bidding on an item should be discussed. let them join first would be my opinion. Also if a bidder wins an item, he should have a limited time to, say 7 days to make payment. Vlad and Carol have paypal which is nearly instant payment. Some don't like that form, and should send MOs, or checks and be prepared for them to clear. Items should also have a shelf life. 7 days, 14 days, etc. Non payment for an item would br put back on the shelf, or offered first to the bidder prior to the non paying winner. This needs to be tossed around and fleshed possibly in a private forum, as well as taking thoughts from this side..... Good idea Tinky, but lets not rush into something to close to the holidays. Quite a few members don't view this forum after the ground freezes......Gil

Quite a few members don't view this forum after the ground freezes

I think it's the opposite actually. Winter is the busiest time of year for the forum, because we all get cabin fever, and are doing research and stuff.

I do agree all the rules should be set before it starts, those are some good ideas Gil, thanks for the input.

I count numbers and the last day and a half has set a record number of viewers for the treasure stories. I agree winter months will increase your exposure to selling items for the site. Just depends upon what you decide to list. It should prove interesting.

I like the idea, but I'm concerned with our International members. It wouldn't be fair not to include them in an auction by just having a USA only auction. But mainly, if they do win a bid on a ring or a coin, I don't know what the best way to be able to ship it would be.

With a customs form stating what is in the package, how safe would it be? Everyone and their mother would know what is in the package.

Are these concerns unwarranted? Maybe our International members can add some comments here.

Not really a problem, imho. If the item is of relatively low value, then at least Finnish customs won't even bother with it. Taxes and tolls must go over a certain value before they collect it. As for the customs declaration, well..it is not really that necessary to write down the *exact* nature of goods. "spare parts", "souvenirs"..etc are often used :) Shipping would be best via air mail, and safest too I think. Air mail rates from US are actually quite low.

Of course postal services vary from country to country, and shipments do disappear. But if we are talking of couple 10's of $ then I'd take the risk, more expensive items can be insured.
