Got out to an old ball field where I had some luck last week and pulled a Merc out of the first base path. It hadn’t occurred to me to dig in the diamond itself until then, and I only had time to hit from home plate to first base. But I went back and finished the rest of the diamond yesterday. I pulled a 1958-D Roosie a couple feet from the pitcher’s mound, 1948-D Roosie between the third base line and the bench, and a 1964-D Washington around the shortstop position.

Only thing is, the ground was so hard I had to hack my way into the dirt instead of digging a plug, and I was a little too on target with some of my hacking.

Also pulled up a couple of religious charms (lead and copper/bronze) and a Cub Scout bobcat handkerchief slide.

Also pulled a couple of lipstick tubes, a belt buckle and 5 wheaties along with some other odds and ends. Just about everything was inside the diamond. It was hard digging but worth it. Most of the stuff in the outfield was clad and junk.

Happy hunting!

A 1964 silver washington was your "first silver quarter" ? Congratulations then, you did it in correct date order. It would have been unfair if you skipped straight to Standing quarter, barber quarter, or seated quarter. You had to "pay your dues" and get the Washington first.

Ok, now you can advance to the next row of class. BUT REMEMBER, no skipping a grade and going straight to 1800's next quarter. It has to be something in the 1910s or '20s first. After all, what's fair is fair :friends:

That’s right, Tom. I’m making sure to follow the correct order now. I found 8 Mercs and a Barber dime before finding my first silver Roosie, so I’m going to do the quarters in order to balance it out! Your 30% is in the mail, by the way.

Nice finds. I will have to check the diamonds next time I'm at my local ball field that isn't under lock and key. I found my first silver quarter in the outfield, but have been striking out since then.

Tom, you crack me up.

“Striking out,” I see what you did there. The stuff in the outfield at this place is deep. You can dig a Zincoln at 5 inches. On the diamond, though, everything was within 2 inches of the surface. The quarter was at probably 1/2 inch or less under the hard pack.

It's all in fun. I get a charge out of seeing what other people find, and the people that make us all laugh (like mud-puppy). Half the the fun of md'ing is show & tell. Like football, fun to play but equally as fun to see the others doing it, so we can scream and yell hoots and hollers at watching NFL on TV.

So too do we md'rs enjoy seeing other's finds, and tooting our horns (showing off) our own trophies. If we never had an md'ing friend to rib with the locker room talk, then it wouldn't be half as fun :)

Good to know. I pulled the Quarter from about 6 inches but I have found clad at around 4 and plenty of pull tabs around 5 or so.

Nice bunch of silvers and relics, Bo! The fairgrounds where Ive pulled out around 10 silvers is hard as a rock in the summer, and I kissed a Barber dime with my digger last year chipping away at the hard dirt and stones.

It happens
