Hey guys, got my Equinox today so took it for a spin. I pulled tons of trash, a penny and this metal object. I'm trying to figure out if it might be a meteorite or just slag or something.

It has a weird section that's like graphite or carbon (sparkly and black)... or burnt wood that's indented into it.

It's kind of flat, one side is smooth with various bumps and the other has a vein or branch like pattern.

I don't know if meteorites can be this shape and I don't know why it would have that black stuff indented into it.

I want to clean it further but I also want to make sure I don't do any harm to it, just in case. I've read vinegar might be a good choice?

In any event, I had fun. I really didn't want to put the damn thing down!

Thanks

It sure looks like it might be, when you find out for certain let us know!

Well that seems to be the hard part. Is there a place that those on this forum send their meteorites to for examination?

I was discouraged about the fact that its not magnetic, but when looking up non magnetic meteorites, they do exist and it does resemble the Millbillillie meteorites that aren't magnetic.

Check out the meteorite links in this post -

I would first email a copy of the photos to several places first to see if any meteorite place feels it is worth further examination, if it is, there might be some close by universities you could call to see if they have a geology department you could take it to in person (get a signed receipt if they need to hold it for study)

Some very good information there, Gary. I have started the email process.

The shape of the thing was concerning to me, but when I see pictures like this from your link, I guess it's possible.

Great !!!! let us know of the responses you get, might take some of them several days to reply if they are busy, but I did get replies back when I emailed some photos out before. I like to send to several places and not rely on just one opinion.
