Finding nickels....

I don't undertand...

These are the most easily recognized signals to see in VDI, this must be an audio problem for you guys. Dig every solid 19 VDI you see on a Whites and every now and then it will be a white gold ring instead

rusty nails

I'm new to MD'ing so all I seem to find is rusty nails  though in the totlot I did find some coins... now if the weather would be better I could go out more.

Zekehooper. Just take a handfull of real coins. Put them around your yard and see what they ring up as on your detector. Make notes for future reference. Easiest way to learn is to dig everything till you understand what your detector is telling you is down there. Two years and I've still got a lot to learn.

Yep, on the AT Pro that's right on the money.
Almost every one I have dug was a solid 53.....
Sonny

I dig them all the time with my pro. But,not as much as the others. Most of the time they ring right at 51-53.

I know right where they tone in on my machine, I just don't seem to come across them... I really never thought of it until this post... wierd!

Takes getting to know your machine and lots of time in the field.

One day you will be as good as me.

I have moved up from rusty nails to pull tabs..:D

Pres. $1 - Presidential $1 Coin

I tried to copy and paste a chart from a US Mint . gov website but it didn't work. Above are the figures for the number of coins minted this year. It starts pennies on left (816.8 million) then nickels (159.12 million) then dimes, quarters, 50 cent pieces.
Nickels are a lot less then pennies and dimes but I was surprised to see more nickels are minted then quarters. The last two column were dollar coins.

I almost forgot to add that I have only found a couple of nickels in my limited time as an MDer. Found $3-$4 in clad and maybe 3 nickels at the most.

One main reason for finding more pennies and dimes than quarters and nickles is, now think about this,... You drop a quarter. If YOU dont see it, someone following you will unless its dropped in deep grass, mud or snow. Same goes for nickles. Pennies and dimes are much easier to lose due mainly to size. They go deeper into the grass, woodchips, gravel, mudd etc etc. My friend and I were talking about this one day and thats the idea we have. Bigger and shinier = easier to find and pick up. Smaller and darker ( Pennies) easier to miss. Kinda funny how most of the numbers Ive seen are around the 9% of the total take is nickles.

Same here. Today I paid more attention to mid range tones and when I saw 51-53 I dug. Got 3 nickels. Most I've dug in one day.

Nickels

I wind up with few nickels too. I think because people don't carry nickels much. Then sometimes I am not paying attention to the tone for a nickel as it is simular to that of Iron and Foil. I notice zinc more as it is the normal tone when not using tone mode. I use the M6 by White's

Real reason you find so many pennies is people won't bother to bend over and pick them up . I have seen pennies on pavement a lot. I think they feel it isn't worth the effort to bend over or it might embarass them to do so.

nickels

I agree with the majority on this topic. Pennies are abundant because even when they're dropped, people let them lay there 'cause it's only a penny. Nickels are not dug up as often because they "could" be pulltabs. Could also be a gold ring too. My wife just emptied her purse of loose change from an undetermined period of time and the coin ratio compared to nickels was:
Quarters 7:1, Dimes 3:1, Pennies 5:1.

Why would anyone discriminate out a pull tab? Unthinkable! Pull tabs for me and i'm being serious...are golden!

How your machine is set up will affect how it locates those "trashy" type signals. Amongst those signals is where you will find nickels and small gold jewelry such as ladies rings, bracelets and earrings. I open up my discrimination, power down somewhat and use a slow swing speed. I have had my V3i now for just over one year and recently took an inventory on the nickels I recovered with it. The total was 509. Four being Buffaloes, and two war nickels. My hunting sites are mainly schools, parks and tot lots. Do I bring home the pull tabs, can slaw and other bits of trash? You bet I do. Where there is trash, there are or have been people. Where there have been people, their have been dropped items; some good and some not so good. Set up your machine for the site you are hunting. Not too many people expect to find nickels or small gold jewelry if their machine is set to go deep for old/silver coins. Relax those settings some, experiment with what works best for you. Have patience, and keep swinging. Dig all those nickel signals and you will eventually be rewarded. I know I was. Good luck and Happy Hunting

I discriminate very lightly, run full sensitivity, notch out nothing, and I dig everything. My only drawback is that I may swing too quickly. I've never had a good reference of what was right and wrong, but I go with what works for me and is comfortable.

Agreed on that Mike. But yeah, Silver things are so much easier to see, and yeah, ive been guilty of ignoring pennies laying on the ground too. Heck, up until recently I've been known to leave a penny (75 on the ATpro) in the ground cause I dug 94 of them suckers one day and got bored digging them. Well, got a nice little .925 silver ear ring with a nice big stone in it the other day at,, you guessed it 75 on my AT pro. If it had not been at the start of my session I may have left it. LOL. Now I'm digging everything from 49 up with the exception of 58-69 or so. Around here all that falls in that range is lawnmower chewed aluminum can pieces or partial pop tops/pulltabs.

Gonna try stopping by a local jewelry shop to get a few things assessed and/or verified as to weather it IS .925 or not. Also, found in my stash of goodies a 1954 Quarter I forgot I had. So that makes 1900 Lib qtr, 1904 Lib dime, 1942 Merc dime, 1954 Qtr and 1962 Rosie dime for my silver coins. I dont think thats too bad for a guy who works 55+ hrs a week and has only been at this hobby for 2 years. Not much in the line of rings for me. Just not lucky that way I guess. Leave that to madcitydiggers. lol.

Haha God I hate posts that make me curious..So I don't really understand how some of you dig so few nickels..I don't kill them but in reality I find a lot of nickels. I'll admit they are the fewest of my coin finds usually but not by a wide margin. At the moment for the year I have 69 quarters, 79 dimes and 54 nickels, (pathetic I know), pennies ain't getting counted. Thinking back it seems about the normal average ratio for clad for me. Now I pretty much set my disc at just above iron and dig everything else so maybe that's it or maybe they hand out more nickels around here :D :D Still you made me empty my darn jar and sort them all out :( One of these years I'm going to keep track of how many tabs I dig, just to see what my ring to tab ratio is :) Can't wait to see that little stat.
