hey gang fairly new to detecting. Have an equinox 900 about 8 months old maybe 1-2 months heavy use. Mostly beaches and in water. Currents pull/push coil, wet sand is heavy etc etc. Well seems im 1 of the first to break the coil ears/supports off the 900. Known 600/800 issues. Yes the base is wider and sturdier. But the gauge thickness is about the same. Minelab is great. The are sending me a new coil , but id like to prevent this again.. anyone making the 900 stiffeners yet ??

It should take the same stiffeners that the 600/800 use because the coils are interchangeable. A minelab tech told me that almost all the broken ear issues were from detecting in sand

I agree. It seem that only the water hunters break coil ears.

A Minelab rep told me the only reason the coil ears break, is because the nut was overtightened.

I then asked the rep, "If the user is overtightening, then why aren't the coil ears breaking on all their other detectors"? The rep did not reply.

Not the same as 600/800, I made that mistake. Last time I checked the 700/900 could be bought on eBay from Europe.

Unfortunately 600/800 are not the same the shape and width of base or wider …Over tighten will create negative pressure on the ears as u bending them in when over tighten. Plus i keep mine fairly loose so i can follow shape of sand edges.bars.

Are you saying the 600/800 coils won't work on the 700/900 detectors?
They will not work.

Not true. My 800 ears both broke on a soccer field and I had an ear stiffener on at the time. Service guys said over-tightening is the main cause. The ear thickness is too thin to begin with. Solution - make the ears thicker.

Not true. My 800 coil ears broke on a soccer field and I had an ear stiffener on at the time (waste of money). The ML service guy said over-tightening is the cause of the breakage. The ears are way to thin. Solution - make the ears thicker. I ditched the ear stiffener and did Gigmaster's fix and the ears on the replacement coil are now much stronger and have held up for years.
