Doing away with dollar coins

I am convinced!!

I love dollar coins but would hate to see a stripper with a big bulge of dollar coins in her G string.
I would kinda turn me off. ;)

:laughing::laughing::laughing:

Finally! An argument for paper money that I can understand!

Death to $1 coins!!:lol::lol::lol:

Only men in Europe carry man-purses as far as I know.

In the book Metal Detecting: An Essential Guide to Detecting Inland, On Beaches and Under Water, author John Clark hunts in Europe and notices that in the countries where men use man-purses, beach finds are reduced because there are fewer pocket spills.

The likelihood of American & Canadian men adopting man-purses is pretty slim IMO. It is not within our nature.

Fear of the man-purse is another silly reason for the US to not adopt $1 coins.

... Personally I don't think its a big deal as the only people I know who still use cash instead of debit cards are the over 60 crowd.

Another great argument. I hardly EVER carry cash anymore (under 60 ).

Coin purses coming back is an interesting idea.

This topic is great! It touches on so many interesting things.

Intrinsic vs symbolic value

Physical money vs credit units (with my debit card I trade computer bits)

Real Men vs Men Who Carry Coin Purses :) Just kidding! I would have liked to see ANYONE tell George Washington he wasn't a man because he carried a coin purse!

I think that our friends in the Great White North have proven that dollar coins could work in the U.S. Oh come on! They're not THAT different!

uh dan you should have dropped that 1/2 year age thing when you entered grade school.
hope your not regressing.
gl2u

Thanks, you called it!

I love doing that "and a half" bit - it brings a lot of laughs, and makes me feel like a kid again. (I was kidding about having lumbago, too. Whatever that is.)

Coin purse

As an American here in Germany I carry a coin purse of sorts. It also holds my id's and credit cards and is small enough to fit in my front pocket. I don't carry a wallet now that I'm used to the "purse".

dollar coin.

Irony struck me today. When gassing up and getting some groceries on the US side of the border, I got an american dollar coin in my change lol. I forget the date.....I want to say 1986(?) Kennedy dollar, I know it had Kennedy on it anyway. Now I don't know what to do with it lol. Does the coinstar take them? I have a date with that thing anyway....

Well I dont carry much cash at all so for me the point is moot. Soon enough they are going to get away from any cash. We are moving into the electronic credits age, the reasoning will be that they are not counterfeitable and, they can verify the person using the card through Biometrics. Now granted people like me wont like it but that is what is coming.

There's not a Kennedy dollar. There's a Kennedy half-dollar or Eisenhower dollar. Double check the coin and the date. A 1986 would seem a bit rare. I suspect Coinstair will reject it. You could always mail it to me and I will take care of it for you.

It was a 1997. Sorry I was at work when I posted that and my memory was obviously wrong. lol.

Everyone says that yet all the technology has actually made it much easier for people to steal money. You don't even have to risk bodily harm anymore, just sit at home on a computer. Hard currency is far more secure than anything technological.

I was big in the movement to push out the dollar bill for a dollar coin. I wrote letters to congress, etc. Posted links here to get others interested to do the same.

From my understanding which was written to me by my congressman, what he claims is happening is.

That the "presidential dollar coins" are being phased out. They were under minting contract to produce a dollar coin for every president. Now the letter also stated that the coins they have billions of already are not going to be destroyed. They are simply stopping production of the presidential coins.

It sounds as though the circulation of the coins will not cease any more than it already has. So he said the objective is to use the surplus they have now, which will prevent them from having to build new storage units to warehouse the overabundance of coins in. Which to me makes sense.

I know as consumers, we all hate to carry coins. That's why our piggy banks are full, but as metal detector hobbyists ... we should embrace ANY coin as it is what makes the return on investment (ROI) so great for this hobby. Imagine those pocket spills of penny's being turned into pocket spills of dollars. I would love it. So, my next plan of action is to push for circulation of said surplus of coins.

I don't think you can force people to use dollar coins. I remember when the postal service stamp machines gave Susan B. Anthony's as change half the people went to get them to add to their collection and the other half was mad and grumbling because they view them as a nuisance. I've seen cashiers refuse Susan B.'s mainly because the cash drawers do not have a section for dollar coins. Forcing the coins is not going to cause every business to go out and get new cash registers. You can't force Americans to use them because only old people use cash anymore and the older men are absolutely going to refuse carrying coin purses or having to carry more weight in their pockets. The only true way to force it would be to suddenly start paying Soc Sec or SSI in form of dollar coins.

Actually, Canada has already been through the process of forcing the dollar coin upon its populace. And it worked out fine. Many people were angry at first, but they had no choice because dollar bills were simply removed from circulation.

Things have settled down now, and the few Canadians I know tell me they are happy with the dollar (and two-dollar!) coins that everyone uses now.

Well, let's look at a bill that has been shunned as well. How often do you get $2 bills in your cash bundles? It's the same thing essentially. Would you use a $2 bill if one ended up in your wallet? Would a cashier turn a $2 bill away? It's legal tender...

Legal tender can NOT be turned away by anyone (company) taking money for goods or services. If I am not mistaken, that's a federal offense to refuse legal tender (CASH [which includes coinage]).

While those laws do truly exist they aren't enforced. I remember as a child many a store refusing $2 bills. I also remembered why my dad said people wouldn't carry them, but I can't even say it on here. Even in recent years I've been to several places that REFUSE coinage. I had a few dollars in coins I tried to use at a gas station and it was refused because they said they had a rule against having to count out lots of coins. My credit union refuses to accept ANY coins unless they are rolled in paper rolls with your name and checking account# written on the side.
