I have been out detecting much due to work and the awful wet weather we have been having here in Wales and when I have managed to get out, nothing much turned up.

That changed yesterday when I attended a dig on the same ground I found a Roman fibula just after Christmas

It was another slow start with lots of old shotgun bases coming up and not much else.

A rather corroded Elizabethan button bucked my spirits a little and I decided to carry on detecting around some shallow rocks out crops that were the scene of lead mining going back into antiquity.

My luck finally changed when I unearthed the ring below...Not overly impressive looking, but I had a hunch it was something special, so posted a couple of pics on Brit forum I am a member of...Almost immediately, my hunch was confirmed when two of the more experienced members said they thought it was Bronze Age, Middle Bronze to be exact...

To say was over moon was an understatement. If confirmed it will be my oldest Find yet at about 3500 years old, give or take....

It known as Bronze Age Coiled Finger Ring and the museum link below gives details on a similar one:

*Only* 3500 yrs. old ? Shucks, we find rings and coins that old in the USA all the time ? What's the big deal ?

I just can't imagine finding things from the Roman days, not to mention the bronze period, It is unfathomable for me here. If I find something from the year 1861 or earlier, I'm blown away. I am so jealous, and well done to you.:waytogo:

Thanks Hoser... You should have seen the Roman stuff that came up, it was amazing...another half dozen Fibula,s some in really good condition plus a couple of other types of brooch from that period, although strangely no Roman coins this time...A BA socket axe head also came up, plus a smattering of silver hammered coins of various ages... The Roman stuff seems to be found in small hot spots, where as the BA finds tend to be completely random...Both seem to be on the higher ground, rather than in the fields/farmland of the valley below...

That said, we have had club digs on other parts of the Estate, and hardly anything decent at all has come up; it really is all down to the luck of the draw...

I am still waiting to find a lead Templar cross though! 😀
If it makes you happy Tom, I should add I went out to a different area this morning, got soaked wet through and my only find was a small brass 1/4oz weight...not even a coin!
