Do You Metal Detect For Exercise?

Because I will dig just about everything, it is good exercise for the legs. But for me to be able to do that, get up and down 50+ times a day, at almost 62, I must do other forms of exercise. So I do a walk/jog every other day and I have now added biking back in every other day. All in the name of "detecting" lol

While detecting is way better for you than sitting around watching TV, I really don't think of it as a form of exercise. It's way too slow moving to give you any cardio benefit. Possible benefits may be the fresh air and stress reduction that it brings...

I don't consider it to be exercise.

Some people have classified it as hard work, but I don't feel it is...

I’m with you, guys...detecting is definitely better than sitting on the couch, but for me it’s not really exercise or strenuous activity in the least. It’s too slow moving - I’m sure I get more cardio benefit from walking my dog for 20 minutes a couple times a day than I do from a full day swinging the detector. To tell the truth, since I started detecting 3 years ago, I’ve gained 20 lbs!! Largely because I’ve allowed my detecting addiction to steal all the time I used to spend in a weight room - instead of pumping my body weight in iron and working up a sweat, I’m spending my free time leisurely swinging a 2 lb detector in a field   I’ve lost overall muscle mass, and gained a spare tire around my middle!

That said, I can understand that the opposite can be true for many folks depending on their overall lifestyle, health condition, and/or age. I’m 49, and my knees and overall health is (was??) good, which is probably somewhat atypical for the hobby.

I consider it exercise, especially when I get skunked! Have to justify hiking in the woods for three hours and coming home with a few shotgun shells. "Well, at least I got some fresh air and exercise!" LOL!
