There's only a couple of fella hunt the cemeteries I know of...one called Burke and the other one Hare....there is never a good reason to go hunting in cemeteries.

New ones its just disgusting, old ones are as bad and really old ones are going bring the natives running with court orders to bankrupt you

If I ever see anyone swinging a coil over one of my loved ones graves I will beat them down into the ground and take there detector from them and sell it or destroy it in front of there face !!! These posts should be deleted or locked from the start !!! This is such a stupid and child like question to ask on this forum !!!

I agree, these posts are a dime a dozen, and they all have the same ending. They are locked. Lock them quick, and be done with them.

Right on Brother Midnight ! And I also must say one more thing... If I see anybody swinging a detector over "anyones" resting place I will do the same to them also !!! Its called respect for the dead/love ones !!!

Would I ? NO, I hate any kind of bad karma, but the thing about posts like this are funny. Why is because people just freak out about the simple question. People think it may be a desecration of the grave. Disrespect towards the grave. Which I may agree with in some terms but I have also seen a backhoe drive directly down a line on top of all the rested to dig another hole. Mowers and weedwhackers doing the same. And then in terms for all the treasure hunters out there. Would YOU if you had the chance, and say someone said you are coming with, even if its not say 100% metal detecting, would you take the opportunity to hunt the Titanic, or any other sunken ships? Would you walk into King Tuts tomb? Hunt all the Civil War areas or maybe Indian burial grounds or Oregon Trail, or any other historic battles, train wrecks, burnt down houses? Because this is where people lost their lives, and that's where their spirit may be. People find belt buckles, buttons, lockets and whatever else may have been on the person that actually lost their life. A person in a grave is, and this is in most respect to the dead, not going to drop anymore. Its what may be lost during the visitations. Once again, I will not detect a graveyard!! But as for anyone who may want to, you do what you want to do and I'll leave it at that!

Difference is we know when someone is resting in piece, also when they found and every time they goto the titanic they treat it with respect.

There are graves in England of wealthy people who were buried during the plague that were buried with precious stones in the form of a glass paperweight type ball that they believed when they were alove would stop the plague.

They are worth a lot of money and others buried with jewelry worth money and id still not even consider grave robbing, even clad barely under the surface is grave robbing in my book and I worked in a cemetery for a while doing the mowing and resettling the grave stones. and some of those graves were my ancestors I even laid back against the back of one while having lunch...I do so love the support of my family..lol.

But joking aside its about as disrespectful as you can be, its someones final resting place, it doesn't matter if your atheist, simple respect is all...so NEVER NEVER hunt in a cemetary

like you have absolutely no where else to hunt and dig that you are considering a cemetery????

Personally, i don't get why anyone would even need to ask,or would even consider hunting cemeteries. I understand that each generation adopts their own morals and values, but somethings are just plain wrong.

Don't think quickly closing these threads would be good, since the person who started it, might actually go hunt there, without thinking it through. It's morally wrong, but removing stuff could also be a serious crime in some areas (like here in Florida). Don't think the newspaper headlines would be good for the person who gets caught, their family, or our hobby. Too many other places to hunt, that won't cause any grief. Most every town has sidewalks, and a grass strip between the curb and sidewalk, which is usually safe to hunt. Lots of coins and keys to be had, interesting items occasionally...

Again? I hate these threads, but a newbie doesn't know we have discussed this to death many times. What do you think every citizen that knows nothing about metal detectors who sees you will think you are up to? You are digging up aunt Jane's diamond ring or John Doe's wedding band? Besides the whole desecrating a grave aspect. Like others have stated, if you do, pray you are not near one of our relatives or friends grave. I guarentee you, be seen digging over the wrong grieving guy's relatives and it could be your last target. Now is it worth it for a few coins????

So now this friendly metal detecting forum resorts to name calling? Especially from an elite member like yourself? Just looking back to post 1 of this thread I see ulcrev just joined last month. And seeings how if you miss 1 day on this forum, especially in the general hobby, a persons thread could be 3 pages down in the same day. So in all do respect, I think just because you may have seen plenty of this topic doesn't mean ulcrev has.

If you don't believe in hunting graveyards I hope your convictions extend to the hunting of civil war battlefields. Both places where people have died/or a buried. I've seen many people talk bad about hunting of graveyards but magically it's ok for them to dig battlefield areas as their interest is in relics.

To me it depends on where in the cemetery you are talking. I used to live behind a cemetery that had a grove that people would go and picnic in right in the center of the place.

It was down in a valley and was a nice grassy spot where people would play football and play Frisbee with their dogs and I've detected there many times.

As long as you are not near the graves I personally see nothing wrong with it.

Just use your better judgment and don't go anywhere people would think you are detecting near the graves.

Just my .02

I think there might be some promise in cemetaries and live a block from one. But I find it disrespctful to hunt them. Does anyone hunt cemetaries?
I have hunted some, most areas that I hunt are the walk ways, and parking areas that are of dirt/gravel. In a cemetery, you will not be digging down to the areas that the casket are at. Many people that at cemeteries fiddle with things in their pockets, while thing of the people/family members in the cemeteries. They will loose things, coins, keys, rings, watches, knives, etc. You will find trash, so, I take all trash out with me, and if someone ask me what I am doing, I tell them that I search for all metal items and take the trash out and place it in a trash can, or deposit it in the trash at home. Now, if someone ask you in a nice way, o stop and leave, be respectful and leave. No big thing.
