Is anyone watching "Diggers" on Nat Geo tonight? I've watched about four episodes, and it seems a bit silly. The two hosts of the show act like Abbott & Costello; the straight man who seems somewhat sensible, and the excitable character who screams and yells, jumps all over the place and rolls on the ground when he finds something. I have a feeling that the artifacts they find might be planted, because everyting is about 1-3 inches down.

Any opinions?

I seems that the answer to this question for the most part is that this program has hurt the hobby much more than it has promoted it. The recent released versions have slightly calmed down the craziness that was their trademark in the past.

i think it is funny. We all know they are hunting those sights none of us can get permission to do. National Geographic and Garrett probably paid lots of money to get those permissions for those two to be able to get access for them and their traveling archeologist.

It is a fact that all the reality shows are now scripted. It started becoming obvious with the show "American Picker". They were caught buying their own merchandise that had been planted. They do hunt planted fields. The crazy actions are what the producers want. And I agree, it does hunt the hobby. Now some people are afraid that horse shoe out in their field is now worth $50.

I think it has increased interest in the hobby, and most take it for the entertainment and historical education value. Anyone who takes any reality show for gospel needs to rethink their thought processes.
I enjoy it, and watched it last night :)

Remember the first year it was on? How Garrett AT Pros were out of stock everywhere?

Then we had a ton of those AT Pros in the Classifieds, as well as Craigslist, and dealer trade ins. Ah, the memories!

I enjoy watching it. I dont care if there are planted finds, feak finds, or whatever. I like to learn about some of the history they talk about on there. If you dont appreciate history, then why go out searching for historical artifacts?

I had a dealer accuse me of buying an AT pro because of this stupid show. Nothing could be further from the truth. Those guys on that TV show seem so fake to me. I think they could do more for the hobby by going around the country and maybe doing some interviews with real guys that metal detect and possibly share some interesting history along the way.

How about when you approach the tot lot with your detector and hear a little voice say " mom mom is that one of those crazy guys from the TV?" This kinda gives you at least part of the message that is being presented.

Diggers

Their excitement over some of their finds seem to be a bit more 'theatrical' than one would expect.
I found a 45 caliber bullet that "had hit something" when hunting the area of a place known as the "Stone Corall" on the Sante Fe Trail. But I didn't get THAT excited!

DIGGERS finds...

I just want to find one gold nugget like they had on the show had last night.
Probably should look closer to an old gold mine than here in SE Mo tho....

If you have Facebook, send George a request. He's very approachable. Somehow I doubt anybody will have the stones to ask him about planted finds. I know a hunter who was there on one hunt. Everything is on the up-and-up on this one.

The behavior on Season 1 is FAR from how it is now. Calmer, more about the history and values aren't talked about at all. I just wish their production house didn't dub in the tones like they do. I sent their production house a couple tips about it. Never heard back though.

I like the show and watch it for the laughs the wife and I get from it. Also, it's fun laughing while what those two are doing is a favorite pass time of ours. All in all, I think it's pretty good for what it is, entertainment with a slight history learning curve to it.

Plant

Hate the show, think it has hurt the hobby. New people with bad plugs and all. Watched for 5 minutes the other night flipping thru channels and it was towards the end of the their "hunt". And I started looking/thinking....those have to be two of the cleaniess "hunters" I have ever seen. So then at first when a thread came up about the plants I so na they won't be planting stuff would they?? And yes now I say dat be a yea.

Did that seriously happen to you? LOL

I don't mind the show, actually like it. I really don't see it as a bad thing for our hobby. I don't think anti's invest their time in watching this. I don't hear stories of vegans watching the Pursuit or Outdoor channel's (although I'm sure a couple have). I also don't believe there are even slightly organized groups with their main agenda to ban metal detecting, who sit around watching Diggers planning protest on congress to ban MDing.

I would also think if the industry though it was bad for the industry they would pull it. If a kid would have said that to me I would have guessed the only reason he saw it is because one of the parents had an interest in the hobby and the child was watching with the parent, otherwise the show wouldn't have been on. After raising 3 kids and having a granddaughter around the the house, when the tv is on its either on what they want or what I want.

I say this, confess this rather, at the risk of being verbally abused and told to "grow up" by my fellow detectorist, for my opinion, as I have in the past. LOL

Yes, I also assumed that the child had heard those words probably from a parent. I ignored the comment and just went on with my search. I have been approached by curious individuals who had seen the show and asked questions that did not exactly flatter the shows contents. So far this year I have not heard ill comments other than those I have seen on the detecting forums. These also seem to have waned since they have toned down the show. This hobby for the most part has an uphill battle and anything that has a bad reflection on it, probably should be talked about right here on this forum.
