detecting a career

lol

Been retired since 2010, if I could have made a career out of metal detecting, I wouldn't have worked for 33 years, it's just a hobby bro, exercise , getting out , something to do, once in a blue moon you find something nice, but mostly your dreaming of finding treasure, happy hunting, PS don't quit your day job , you will starve , but you will be able to pay for your batteries used detecting, after you clean the coins with a tumbler :laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:

Some of my zincs don't make it through the tumbler! :(

Yep Felix

Took my V3i out for the 1st time Saturday, 213 clad, I found a few zinc's I had to trash, no silver, got a puppy this year, can't make it to the beach, but last year some of those new pennies don't make it 1/4 as long as the pennies before them  from the salt, Earl

It would be really tough, but if you owned your home at the beach and enjoyed ramen noodles 3 times per day i'd say you could have a chance...

Part of the problem is there are websites now like RING FINDERS that makes it very difficult. I doubt seriously if you could compete with them and make enough on returns to live doing it locally. Even supplementing it by hunting just wouldnt provide enough income no matter how conservative you are. You would have to find a way to sell found gold making way more than melt. Equipment up keep, fuel, and living expenses and just the lack of finds eat up most of anything you make. I certainly wouldnt quit my day job.... and im retired. My suggestion..... try the hobby doing it part time and do some bean counting. Believe me.... you will find this is a HOBBY and nothing more.

Dew

Amen to that:yes:

Let me also say there are people who dont post that do very well out there.... why? Because they dont post. Its a great way to supplement a good retirement check and start a sweet collection. Ive worked hard at it.... but every year it seems there is less and less to find. DONT get doped by some of the people who may have the skills to hit a beach on their lunch hour and pull several thousand dollars worth of gold. If they could do that with any consistency why would they be working?

Im wondering if you have a wife how that conversation might go....? I doubt youd get half way thru it before you see a card board box and all your stuff going out the door.

To borrow from fishing philosophy...

Z , if I lived in Mexico , I could live like a king at the beach like you, but the cartel might live next door , the beach house is down the road buddy. Dew I do believe that Florida , due to the weather all year round, vacationers , and high class areas do have something to do with your success buddy, but bet its hot down their now, my mother has a place in Dade city, I just might stop by next year , to help you clean up the GOLD :D ATTENTION THREAD POSTER STAND BY NO DETAILS BUT WAIT ON THE New Wider Heavy Duty Stealth Chuck finally started to eat more fiber in his diet, and has a new Stealth Jessie James welding helmet STAND BY PS You will need to spend some money to get into this hobby, waterproof metal detector 1150.00-1600.00, water scoop 250.00,waterproof finds bag PVC mess for drainage 30.00, plus metal detector accessories like extra batteries and fast charger 200.00 , so 2k will get you rolling, but remember it is NOT a career, Earl

with all the comment arising I think that the career idea should just be an idea.

The hobby will pay for your equipment... everything I own or have owned comes from stuff I part with :D there is still some left over for taking trips as well in good years... lots of competition today we didn't have 10 years ago... everyone and their mother detects these days... the good thing most of them suck at it

Road kill is a career detectorist's friend. I have a day old bread store by the house too. I did eat a bad possum once. I could do a number two through a screen door for a week! Steer clear of Armadillos since they have leprosy:lol:

He has such a way with words !

A hunter in my area claims he makes 60k a year detecting,,,BS, and BS,,,,sure, you may find a few nice pieces a year but most are gold bands,,,,and it takes a lot of gold bands to live on being they range in melt value of 60 to 250 each,,,,,thats a lot of bands to pay bills and eat,,,,,its a great hobby though,,,,,GL HH
