Deepest h2O 8" coil machine out there?

I'm in tight spaces where a 12" or 10.5" coil just won't go...anyone? OBN? Anybody ever modify a DF with a 8" coil? Coil brand suggestions?

Garrett ATX?

I was talking with a local hunter recently who uses an ATX and he was telling me it hits a lot deeper than his Excalibur, there is an optional 8" coil for the detector.

Thanks KB. Is he on here, love to pick his brain? Irony is my 8" SS has been VERY effecive as of late. 8" Excal II is growing spider webs. Not sure what to attribute my recent finds to...luck? Sorry no pics, that ship has sailed!

An old friend of mine modded a White's pulse ( the model before the Dual Field, without the pulse delay) with a 6 inch coil. As I remember he wound and made his own coil. It worked well. Without going into too much detail it was site specific, but would get erratic at around 25 feet deep. Above that depth it really worked well.

For ultimate depth, a T/R would be hard to beat. Only drawback is "clean" sand is needed. Black or mineralized just won't do the job.

Let me do some checking and will PM you if I get anything. I have been out of comission for months and slowly getting back into the real world...

I'm on hot rock/coral so a T/R is a no. I'm shallow, less than 6'. Prefer depth over ferous targets. Digging/fanning iron/lead cures my insominia;)

Infinium with 8" coil is pretty damn deep.

Packed coral/rock average depth? I've read that they're built like a tank. How does the coil handle use/abuse? What's the warranty on a new Infinium?
Sorry for all the questions...I need tough, deep, reliable. Something I can ride hard and put away wet if you know what I mean.

See if you can find an Anchor Electronics Barracuda... that baby is super deep... I know Carol and Vlad have a couple... maybe they would part with one ;) My hunting friend also has one and I can ask him if he wants to sell it..

The review on that Barracuda was back in 95'...seems like the technology has advanced quite a bit since then but I sure don't want to rule anything out. Get back to me Craig. Would really enjoy a vets opinion on this.

How is that Mike? The Excal and GT have old technology and are still kicking butt at the beach... The infinium is old technology as well.. they took a dirt machine and converted for the water...

True...I've just never heard of Anchor Electronics till this post. All the others you mentioned with the exception of the Infinium I've actually held/used. Like those of you that covet the old blue Excals...I can't help but think there's a special PI/coil combo out there.

Ask Singing Sand Crab he has one in his signature :)

Aqua.... unlike a VLF where a small coil may be more sensitive but get less depth than a larger coil .... a PI will get the same depth regardless of coils size. So id say one of Eric Fosters machines ....say the DeepStar, but getting your hands on one is almost impossible. It would be interesting to see what an 8" coil on a DF would do.

Check out some of the classifieds out there...I see a super nice CZ20 with 8 inch coil and case for less than $500.

You can run it in all metal as well as discriminate. Great unit and built super tough.

I also agree with those who suggested the Infinium with the 8 inch mono.

Don't understimate the older machines, the aquasound (a TR), aquaseach, aquastar, aquapulse, barracuda, or even the deepstar versions could run with (or just plain run over) most machines today. I have a couple of Eric Foster machines and would honestly put them up against any beach or water pulse.

The deepstar I believe is the deepest, but it is not waterproof. The goldquest aquasearch is, and if memory serves me right there were a few different sized coils that you could use with that machine. It was made by Pulsepower Developments(Eric Foster company) the version 2 is one that I own.

Stay away from the aquapulse, is ment for diving and larger objects than what you are looking for. A forum member whom I respect greatly asked me to check this thread. I know both OBN and Dew know about Eric Foster machines and maybe one of them could chime in.

I am going from memory so if I got one of the machines incorrect, I did not mean to. I will do some checking and pull my machines out of storage to look at. But I could swear it came with an 8 inch coil but I have an 11 inch and a 5 or 6 inch coil stashed somewhere.

The Barracuda by Anchor Electronics was made by Jim Pugh (I think). It is a good detector, but in my opinion not nearly as deep as the Deepstar or Aquasearch. I own all 3 so that comparison is from me using all of them. The barracuda I would put along the lines of the Dual Field, but I believe the DF in the hands of a good operator is better.

Any questions shoot me a PM, I am not a "pro" nor do I intend to write any books, ;) but if I ever slide over to Hawaii, will bring a few along and you can test them out.
