Dangerous Park

I agree.

I live in a very small village, almost zero crime.

Visit Syracuse, Rochester, Utica, Rome, Watertown and if you aren't aware of your surroundings, you are your own worst enemy.

Don't care how tough someone thinks they are, how tall they are, how tough their work out schedule is, how many people they have beaten with a baseball bat, if you are legally allowed and choose to carry, do so. Don't let anyone tell you when and how to exercise your rights.

They are dangerous also.
Very well said! Especially like the BAT reference.
Some think they know it all but are just to dumb to understand.

Here's a perfect example. The guy thought he had a right to shoot an unarmed man, but he was wrong. He got TWENTY YEARS in jail. Carry all you want and brag that you're "packing", but be warned that you can spend a LONG time in jail if the law disagrees with you're "I was afraid for my life" story.

Look what you posted is a ignorant person shooting someone over a parking space has nothing to do with fearing for ones life and that is all you need... You have your beliefs and I can respect them but don't judge me... Its my right to carry if I so choose to.

duty to retreat or comply with the perpetrator

when you have seconds to react, the cops are only minutes away.

you alone are responsible for yourself. situational awareness is paramount.

I wouldn't be concerned with a murder in a local park. but then again, I don't know the situation. there are parks around here that should only be attended by the locals. so if i'm not a local ... I don't go there.

For some reason I always change my position when I dig a hole so that there is no one behind me and always keep an eye on anyone in my view. I actually thought it was because I am a little paranoid but in this day and age it just seems like the sensible thing to do.

For almost forty years, I have been detecting a park near me. I have known for a long time that this isn't the best neighborhood. Yesterday as I went to the park it was blocked off by over ten police cars. Later I found out that they had found a body propped up against one of the picnic tables. Maybe it's time to start carrying a pistol with me while detecting after all.

Was there anything good near the table?

his point is ''no matter how tough you think you are, there is ALWAYS someone else who is tougher",so,your ability to defend yourself cannot be over stated!

If you can team up.
We get so wound up in detecting we rarely know what is around us.
Stay in a well family populated park.
Remember your digger can save you and make sure they don’t get it.

I actually do quite well in these types of areas and have been since 2008. Most folks will not try detecting them but as someone told me long ago you blend in just like a ghost and no one will bother you. No one has EVER even questioned what the hell I was doing except some wild pitbull that charged at me..

Maybe I'm just numb to to the areas I hunt..

Good luck out there but don't go with my advise..

thanks for your service! after 35 years in the field, it's been my experience that MOST people could care two sh*ts less about metal detectorists, but again, that does NOT guarantee your safety when out and about, so therefore, i pack, and always am vigilant no matter where i am.

I carry, always. I have been heavily trained and have trained 100s of others. I feel naked without a handgun on me. It's not about fear, it's about personal responsibility. I, alone, am responsible for my personal safety and the safety of my family.
That being said, I would not detect a park that wasn't safe. There is nothing in the ground worth a serious confrontation.

Jesus.

A couple days ago they found a DOA stabbing victim one town over at a soccer field I've had on my to-do list.

Woof.

well said and agreed to! the "constitutional" right to carry to protect and defend ones life cannot be infringed.

I say you hunt with a partner, have them stand beside you with an AR 15 and watch your back. I mean, it's your right, right?
Honestly guys, I have nothing against guns, I have owned many over the years and still enjoy shooting very much, but I just think people are so paranoid and on edge now a gun is going to turn a possibly nasty situation in to a deadly one for no good reason. Ask anyone who has shot someone if they could have escaped the situation with a black eye versus knowing they took someones life the would choose the black eye.

Always a good idea to hunt with a buddy, specifically one that can run slower than you! :D

Pepper spray is a good choice too especially if dealing with an animal or someone that doesn't know better.

Zee... when I took my test way back when the situations you speak of were taught to us... if you can get away without pulling a gun that is the first thing one should try... No one is looking to pull a gun and use it on another human being but I will not be a victim like my brother was... stabbed in the neck and left for dead by two scumbags who only wanted to steal his car.. they said to each other before stabbing him... shall we kill him?

My brother survived thanks to a good doctor who repaired the artery in his neck... they never caught the scum.. but they found his car 2 days later in New York stripped...
