Ctx 3030 17 inch elliptical coil depth?

I'd find out how it is on smaller coins because sometimes large coils which might increase depth on large objects actually lose sensitivity to small items and some coins. I'd consider a 17in more of a cache hunting or relic hunting coil than a coin hunting coil, unless its a trash free site with few targets.

Good advice, I'll have to ask other guys using the 17 what depths they have pulled coins at

You won't be sorry to have a large coil available. But I recommend that you get a ProSwing 45 harness. You'll thank me. It takes the weight and lets you swing smoothly for longer periods.

I did a full review of that metal detecting harness... I never hunt without it now... 11" or 17" coil.

GL/HH - message me with any questions.

ps: My site is NON commercial...

Do you gain depth on coins or lose depth as some say might happen with the larger coil?

17in coil

In my opinion, there is a slight increase of depth but not much from the stock. I also feel it gives stronger signals. I can swing it for about 3hrs. then go home and take some advil.

You got all sorts of variables. My CTX a surface dime can have a quarters number. We got dry sand here in Fl. When its dry the 17" seems to go the same depth as the 11". After a rain the 17" can go inches deeper. At the beach here the 17" goes deeper than the 11". And ID's better too. May not apply where you live though?

I've been considering the 17" for a couple of weeks now and reading this thread just convinces me  better get it soon!

I would say that it matches the stock coil at worse, and increases intensity of 7+" targets at best.

With my limited hunt time, I frequently only get a fraction of the way through a given site. With some sites, it's hard to ask to return. This larger coil helps me cover more ground...

Grab a proswing 45... attach it at the spot where your CTX balances on your finger. You'll thank me.

I am very interested in getting one but our soil here in the Pacific NW is highly mineralized. I hunt in auto +3 most times and I've seen the "suggested setting for sensitivity go as low as 6. Usually not that low but lots of places it goes low. NOt sure exactly how high the auto sensitivity is usually running at so I'll have to pay better attention there, but my question is, would the benefits of a larger coil be lost on highly mineralized soil like we have here?

I suppose even if so I would still get better depth than I would with the 11? I've heard the expression used in reference to using a larger coil in mineralized soil is like using the high beam headlights in fog, and might just mask other targets while getting no appreciable depth increase?

just want to cover my bases before dropping another $400 for a 17 inch coil.

Thanks

Don

I have used my 17in in trashy yards and it works just as well as the stock and 6in in trash. It amazes me on how well the CTX will see good targets in high trash. My first hunt of the year proved it 100% to my buddy Dave.

I'v had the 17 for about a month. Have not really noticed any increased depth, though that may be the area I am hunting. The coverage is amazing though. It pinpoints as well as the stock coil for me (surprised). It is a bit heavier but I am a big guy and it does not seem to bother me. For smaller people, the harness may be a necessity. I have enjoyed mine.

Yea the weight of it is nothing but I did have some trouble pin pointing with it

I still am able to get very small things with the big coil... Yesterday I got a small gold earring and a little gold toe ring, I was in a very trashy park!

I used my 17" coil strictly at my girls school and it's a jewelry and coin magnet!!!

You guys may have convinced me to put the big coil on and try it out. Been running the stock one so far. :D

Using it at the beach and open fields and find it to be sensitive to small things and covers a lot of ground.
I would wait, instead of sinking $400 You can find a good used one for around $200 or so.

I had the good fortune to get all 3 ML coils with my CTX. I love them all. For poking through shrubs and tall grassy places the 06 is killer. The stock coil you can swing all day and still go way down. The 17 gets the depth and even more COMPLETE coverage when the swings get a little sloppy....the 17 is easy to "wiggle" pinpoint with. And it finds stuff in junk, which amazed me! Fantastic stuff all around. I too have the Pro Swing but haven't had to use it with the CTX at all. The Explorer with probe and big coil=harness time.
