coin cache found by Aquachigger

i certainly hope that find won ya july's garrett propointer giveaway

I'm just happy you had your video camera with you that day.. Thanks for sharing your amazing discovery ..

I posted this video because I subscribe to his youtube channel, and have been following his video's for a while. He has some very significant finds, and I love his style of hunting. He has proven the old adage, "you make your own luck." By metal detecting in a manner that a lot of people don't he has many area's that very few people touch. He was in a garrett promotional video, and if they offer him free equipment, and a chance to field test equipment before its released I am sure he jumps all over it. I would! Do you blame him?

He had been saying he was going to release this video for a while, and I had been anxiously waiting for it. I thought everyone here would love to see it, as it represents a significant find on many levels. I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up in numerous magazines. It has to be one of the largest silver coin caches ever found here in the US that was documented and filmed.

Aquachigger I am happy you joined the forum and are participating in the talks. Can't wait to see more of your discoveries.

Thanks for posting this CT!!:shock::shock: That vid is better than the best MD dream I ever thought possible!!
Welcome to the Forum Aquachigger!!

Welcome to the Forum Aquachigger and thanks for the video, your knowlege and experience will be added to many other seasoned detectorists here. But I gotta tell you, watching that video is almost painful to me. There are no Potomacs around here and we SoCals are history-deprived, relatively speaking.
Hope to travel back East again one day.

I love to watch the vid and drewl over all those coins, but I think this maybe an elaborate hoax. First I think it's unlikely for a cache of coins to date over 87 years during this time period. I just can't make sense of it. If I or probably anyone on this forum were pulling coins like that, would you leave the sight? I would be working it night and day till nothing was left. I would do some serious excavation and sift the whole area and bring in some bro's to help and be part of it. This just seems like a fabrication to sell more Garrett water machines.

Anyone else skeptical?

I would be crying, screaming, jumping up and down, and flipping the F$%%K out if I found one coin like that. He seems happy but not blown away...

I went through the intital omg what an unbelieveable find shock, I went through the skeptical thoughts that it has to be fake, and now I think I can refocus again.

Every once in a while, you can run into a pearl of information where large amounts of money was lost or "reputed" to be lost. I located one possibility but I do not have the research skills to pinpoint a location nor do I have the equipment and skills to recover it where it is "reputed" to be resting. So I do believe a cache of this caliber can definately exist.

Someone mentioned that some of the coins look barely worn which suggests they haven't been exposed for a long time. Recent wash out, new contruction/excavation, or another event may have dislodged it. The old chest they were sitting in finally disentigrated over decades only exposing them for the past few decades. I can think of allot of possible scenerios.

AC could shed some light, but if I was him I wouldn't for fear someone would recreate my steps to locate similar finds before me. ;)

Aquachigger, welcome to FMDF!

No, I said they looked newly minted, meaning they weren't in circulation very long. A coin won't lose detail unless it's being ground down by overburden. Time in water alone won't affect detail.

Another thing to take into account is this year has seen many record low rivers & creeks, This site many have been out of reach or under 10 feet of water last year and possibly may be out of reach next year... It all depends on the rain amounts in the area... Then again that creek/river might run completely dry next year...

I don't visit as often as I'd like, but this one really rekindled the fires to get out and about (and yeah, I still think that maybe, just maybe I too should have bought an AT Pro). Regardless, it is an awesome find, one that I could easily believe would humble you to the point where you made such a calm video. And, since we begin the story about 8 or 10 silvers into the game (and given his other great finds in his career) I can certainly buy into the fact that after the 3rd or 4th coin, the excitement would have subsided from the "jumping and screaming" kind (which I'd still be doing right now if I found something that monumental) to the "holy cow, how much more can there be" disbelief kind of excitement.

Still would like to know, BALLPARK, what is that sort of find worth? Just the silver I'm (purely guessing) thinking would be in the $10-20K range (yeah, PURE guesswork). But really I'm so unfamiliar with these coins that I have no concept beyond what is easily searched for weights.

I got to hold those coins AGAIN at the mini relic show we had at the club meeting the other night. He is so super cool about it. He's like "Go ahead guys, dig right in there and feel around." I'd be afraid some magician type would score some with slight of hand myself. He goes in rivers down south too. He takes trips all the time. He just got back from England and found a ton of old coins there too. He just seems to be successful no matter where he hunts. Check out his 2011 finds all laid out on his pool table too, holy cow. He posted a vid on Facebook, but I don't know if it's on YouTube yet. He said he was gonna post it there too.

It was at a Ford. He mostly finds fords to hunt. I'll be right there with him come spring time. Getting my AT pro soon and my water gear.

I've heard what they are probably worth but he probably wouldn't want it to get out. I'll just say it's quite a bit more than your estimate.

Sorry bud, you're seriously mistaken about this one. He said they were all in about a twenty foot area. He initially found like 121 and went back on subsequent trips to find the current 178. He said there is probably a few left but feels confident that he got most of them. I don't think it's in his character to even begin to think about fabricating a hoax about it. Super nice guy.

Okay, what is a ford? A google search tells me it should have a 5 liter in it lol.

Well, if that is a serious question... a ford is a place in a river or stream that is shallow enough with a hard enough bottom to cross horses, wagons, supplies, etc.

In the early days, there were very few bridges. Fords were extremely important and used often by travelers and the army.
